Dude, bummer for sure.
Join the team....
I say even a 3rd opinion....I got 3 opinions and they still had to screw up the surgery once and do it over again.
WHY ARE WE FALABLE ...???
Heal up quick bro!!!!

You will make a full recovery for sure. Who is your Ortho? They know more about rebuilding knee's now than in past years for sure. I had a good friend extreme skier who blew acl out completely. He came back fast a strong.

Sorry to hear that it will need repair. Good thing that its only a tear and not a total - Kinda thought that was the case based on your symptoms.
(Been there, done that more than once: 2 totals-bumps at Mary Jane and Steamboat trees in thigh deep power). Get a second opinion is a good idea.)
When is the NW Kite hospital party????? Its always a kick to party with ya while you hit the morphine machine button.
So let the trade off games begin.
Nicole gets to nurse you back to health after the surgery. (Test of true love!) Go to PT immediately (the next day after getting home) as they are really good at getting the swelling down and you moving quicker. Let us know if you guys need help with anything, rides, etc. as I know everyone would go out of their way to help you guys.
Then once you're back walking, it's payback time.
Nicole gets her own kite caddy / camera man!

good to hear you are feeling better blowhard! I will talk to a few docs for sure... I am pretty sure that surgery is the only option though unless they are reading the MRI wrong. Besides only 16 months since my shoulder surgery... I like knives!
Thanks again for the well wishes... I know its not unique to me, just my turn to take a breather I guess. Cool to have such an awesome community of friends to make you feel better.
Oh yeah and I will pay ya all back with plenty of photo/video shooting this summer. I am not missing out on the beach action for sure.

sorry to hear it phil.
i've said it before to others and i'll say it til i die. your knee is the most important piece of sports equipment you'll every buy. there is a huge difference between skill levels in ortho's. don't take a chance-research and go to the best, you will never regret it.
dr vern cooley in park city utah is among the best. he is the ortho for the us snowboard/ski team.
i've rebuilt both my knees (acl/mcl/and meniscus), one by a portland's best ortho and the other by him. cooley's job was by far superior. the portland "knee hero" doc's recovery was 6-10 months slower and more painful. the performance of that knee doesn't come close to the Park City doc's job either.

THE best Knee Surgeon in Oregon. |
Seconded. Not sure if he's the best in OR, but he sure did me right. I saw him at Orthopedics Northwest in Tigard. Highly recommended by many... |
I'll put in a third recommendation fro Dr. Grewe. He fixed my knee after a local doctor had screwed it up. Definitely some high props for Grewe, plus he was recommended to me by 3 different pro snowboarder friends of the shop who had successful knee repairs with him.

Dr. Grewe rebuilt my right knee in '98.
The knee job and entire experience sucked compared to my rebuilt left knee from Dr. Cooley.
I totally am planning to go back to Cooley and have Dr. Grewe's knee job looked at to see if it can be "improved" one of these days when i can find the time and extra $.

Dude - what a mess
Two years ago I hit a tree pretty damn hard with my left knee while I was snowboarding. Doc said let it heal by itself and see what happens. two years later my knee feels good - it gets a little bit more fatigued faster than the other knee, but other than that no problems. I feel very fortunate reading about all of these guys with knee injuries and having to go back and get them fixed after the initial surgery didn't go so well I was lucky I guess.
Anyways, Phil, hope you get a good doc and you get it right the first time!!!
