Port district includes all of the upper valley of Hood River, the city and most of Hood River County.

Cascade Locks has their own port district and city counselors but has a designated Hood River county commissioner

The Waterfront Recreation Committee's recommendation to move the Event Site kite board access to end on april 30th will be added as an additional action item at the beginning of the meeting when the Commission President asks for changes/additions to the agenda.

Public comment is at the beginning of the meeting and you need to sign up to speak. During committee reports I will report, as chair of the Waterfront Recreation Committee, what was discussed and recommended. During action items the commission will discuss the recomendation and vote.

The Event Site is scheduled for "improvements" because of all of the events (windsurf races, Kite Board For Cancer, Gorge Games & etc) that are scheduled for the season and the electrical problems that were experienced last season.

Please keep in mind that the Spit is right in the middle of a "contested and much discussed" Goal 5 (native habit, bird, fish, environmental & anything else you can think of) area designated by the City of Hood River. The road/access point was not designed to be a "permanent road & parking lot." It is the top of a "jetty/groin." Restrooms, electrical and a better road will take time and money.

3 commision positions are up for election in May 09. You need to live in the district and be a registered voter.

See you tonight

Can't wait to see what my designation is Laughing

Thanks Sherry!

How do speakers sign-up?

You aren't really helping out people who are actually going to go tonight. Show a bit of respect. If we do have a few people showing up we might want to coordinate so that not everyone has to speak but its known that we are there.

Anyway, thanks Sherry...

Yeah sorry for the spankering, I'm just a grump as usual. But really it would be good to be nice to Sherry. She is the one who brought the idea of the shoulder season for kiters at the Event site to the Port in the first place.

Sorry I am still stuck in P-town at work so I won't be able to make the meet tonight. Sounds like we should have pretty good coverage hopefully, but if your in the area and you can make it please go, I'll buy you a beer Very Happy

Thanks Port of Hood river for listening to us. The CGKA and I look forward to more meetings and plans to make Hood river a better place for all of us.

I don't know if you caught this from Sherry but she mentioned that there are 3 commision positions up for election in May 09. (Only a year off). You need to live in the district and be a registered voter.

Someone who meets the requirements and is electible should run. Having a kiteboarder on the Port Commission would make a lot of sense.

Sherry - can you describe the position requirements more and the duties? Maybe start attending the meetings to get a feel for what's going on.

Things went really well and I am glad that the commission got to hear from the CGKA. I wasn't there for the opening remarks that Forest and Mark made, but once the item was opened up to the committee later in the meeting the president gave us more time to comment specifically on the issue. In the end Sherry decided not to put the item up for a vote, essentially allowing it to die and the rule to stand as it is. Then the committee asked if there might be future representation of the CGKA on the Water Front Recreation Committee to make sure it is balanced to the interests of kiteboarding and windsurfing. The committee seemed to question why the event site was not always open to all sports and that they should be focusing on maximal utilization.

All in all a good start to continue a dialogue with Sherry and the WFRC.

[quote="carolb"] Having a kiteboarder on the Port Commission would make a lot of sense.

The thanks should go to Mark, Forest and Garett for taking the time to "talk" to the commission and making my job a whole lot easier.

Having another "water person" (I'm not skilled enough to kite off the sandbar..yet. I use my kites on Oahu. And, I don't sail from the Event Site because it is just too.....) would make things interesting.

Keep in mind that recreation is a small part of the Port of Hood River's interests. As those who attending the meeting can attest....on going bridge maintenance, family wage level job creation, local business retention, the airport and .... take a lot of time and energy.

As discussed I will research the Water Front Recreation Committee "mix" with staff and take that back to the commission.

Thanks again to everyone who made my job tonight a whole lot easier Very Happy
