PostMon May 05, 08 12:37 pm    Port Meeting Tuesday Night 5:30pm - Event Site Access Issue Reply with quote

There is a Port Commission meeting on the 6th at 5:30pm (Tuesday night)

Details here:
http://www.portofhoodriver.com/info/agenda.php

Anyone planning on attending? CGKA? I think I could make it to attend, I think a few people should probably go so we can be heard on the issue of the Event Site access.

The Waterfront Recreation committee is going to make the recommendation that the Kiteboarder Event Site access be moved back to end of March instead of end of April next year.

I think it'd be good for kiters to express their side of this issue to help prevent the removal of access privledges. If anything we'd be hoping for MORE access to the Event Site next year, not less.

I will be there-- I think we are all concerned about maintaining our access.

Interesting notes from the port's meeting notes: http://www.portofhoodriver.com/Minutes/08April.php

So the Event site is getting improved landscaping and upgraded electrical power. All we get is the road grated.

When is the next Port of Hood River election and what is required to vote?

Quote:
Waterfront Recreation: McElwee stated the watershed is headed for completion and that the Corps of Engineers will be completing a biological assessment of the sand on the Spit so that the Port's application to resculpt the sandbar may be done this next year. It may be an in-kind contribution to the Corps' watershed work. Projects include construction of a trail between the Hook and the Spit connecting to the waterfront park's east and west ends, improving the Event Site landscaping and upgrading electrical power, and improve the roads to the Hook and the Spit. McElwee said that Kerr Construction is crushing the City's old sidewalks and other dumped debris south of the Expo Center; they will have gravel to put on the roadways for this year. Streich said the road needs to be built properly and that gravel will only be a temporary fix.

BTW, Phil, I don't see any mention of the topic of pushing the event site access back to March 31 anywhere in the meeting notes from Mar/Apr or the agenda for today's meeting.

There is a space for Waterfront Rec Committee to give a report. In there last meeting they voted on pushing the date back to March 31st. In Sherry Bohn's last post here she said that the Waterfront Committee would be making the recomondation to the Port and Port would vote on it, and this is the first port meeting since then

That's all I know.

The Waterfront Recreation Committee's recommendation to move the Event Site kite board access to end on april 30th will be added as an additional action item at the beginning of the meeting when the Commission President asks for changes/additions to the agenda.

Public comment is at the beginning of the meeting and you need to sign up to speak. During committee reports I will report, as chair of the Waterfront Recreation Committee, what was discussed and recommended. During action items the commission will discuss the recomendation and vote.

The Event Site is scheduled for "improvements" because of all of the events (windsurf races, Kite Board For Cancer, Gorge Games & etc) that are scheduled for the season and the electrical problems that were experienced last season.

Please keep in mind that the Spit is right in the middle of a "contested and much discussed" Goal 5 (native habit, bird, fish, environmental & anything else you can think of) area designated by the City of Hood River. The road/access point was not designed to be a "permanent road & parking lot." It is the top of a "jetty/groin." Restrooms, electrical and a better road will take time and money.

3 commision positions are up for election in May 09. You need to live in the district and be a registered voter.

See you tonight

Can't wait to see what my designation is Laughing

I'm curious. Do you have an information on the demographics of voters who participated in the Port of Hood River elections?
