I'm a noob and am taking classes in HR this month. I had questions about right of way during my first day. My instructor was disturbingly casual about this. He summed it up as follows.

1. Riders about to land have right of way over riders about to launch.
2. Riders downwind have right of way over riders upwind (presumably because downwinders can't see you).
3. Riders on the starboard tack have right of way over riders on the port tack.
That was it.
Is my instructor setting me up to get spanked or branded as a kook?

I think #1 he is incorrect, or needs a bit more clarification
If you are launching you have right of way over someone trying to land.
They need to take another tack.
You are leaving the "Dock" you have right of way over someone coming in.

#2, downwind riders have right of way, because if you jump or do anything towards the downwind person, you are "Overtaking" them which you need to give way when over taking, sail or power and regardless of windward or leeward

#3 is correct in most situations, but see #1 because it is not 100% always the case. If you are leaving Dock on port tack, someone landing would not have right of way even if they are starboard tack.

Kook is mainly someone that doesn't know WTF to do.

Learn how to self rescue and you will be way better of them most of the other kooks out there.

We saw two people together trying to swim a kite back to the shore leading edge up this weekend. That is a kook. Then they got rescued by Kodiak, so he was taking off the lines...and they just left their bar out there for Kodiak to roll up. That is a kook!

jcohenx, prepare to be tomohawked!! And after your done swimming back to shore with a broken collarbone (cause you need $500 to get rescued at the sandbar) you will have the worst case of rivernose ever seen.

Kooks rarely read NWKite.

Make sure your instructor teaches you the self rescue. They don’t usually like to take the time and effort, which is total BS. It is not IF, it is WHEN you need to self rescue.

Wow, even I would label that a rookie maneuver. Fortunately, my first day in class, I got to learn and apply a self rescue. I was mid-channel off the sandbar, inverted and crashed with the bridle wrapped on the right end of the kite. I got to self-rescue by wrapping the lines, folding the kite and sailing it back to shore. It took 30 min and it wrecked me for the rest of the day but I didn't need a pickup.

I saw the thread the first day it was posted. Hilarious. But I still don't understand what he means by "pitted."

For those too lazy to click....

Pitted - being in the pit of the wave
Pit - the hollow-est portion of a breaking wave

Sweet!
If you pay $5, does that mean you get to be taken out by a kook?
Or does that mean you get to unleash your dog?

Dude - I just figured out how to resolve the dog and the kook problem at the spit. Dog owners unleash their dogs on the kooks - have them mess up lines - dookey on the kites - nip at their heels until they leave - so on and so forth - it will be fun for all - including the dogs!!! (Damn it! Wasn't there a moratorium on dog threads).

LMAO I love the PFD!

I saw a guy on Saturday, he had a rash guard, wetsuit, pfd, and a friggin safety jacket on. I thought for a second that he had a hooded sweatshirt on somewhere under all that shit. He looked like he was going to strom the beach at Normandy.
