seems the kiters in chi-town just dont have the time or want non-locals to participate. gotta give props to nwkite.

my gf (shay) is running the marathon next week. perfect opportunity to get some chicago wind was my thinking...tried to register on their forum to get the local beta. no replies from other kiters or the forum admins. i hear they also have some jack-ass stupid rules on the beaches. you have to check in and out with the lifeguards! also you have to fly some streamer from your kite, color coded so other kiters know your ability and willingness to 'help' kiters in distress. fuckn gay if you ask me. streamers? omfg.

in order to obtain these streamers, you have to demonstrate your skills to a certified instructor who determines your level of kitesurfing understanding, safety and skill level. they then issue you a card which you have to give to the lifeguard or beach monitor who then gives you a streamer. after your session, you have to give back the streamer in exchange for your card.

yes im venting.

jeezuz. Evil or Very Mad

Well, I would have to agree... The Chi-forum is not nearly as cool as ours..
Plus they don't post pics..
And, you r right, they don't reply that often, especially to newcomers...kinda weird.
These guys were on the scene early, so maybe they are still a little stiff from converting from windurfing.. Wink
They are not all that bad though, I have had a few good sessions with some of them.
The streamer thing is due to a bunch of newbs kiting in downtown Chi at a really busy beach...I think it was closed for awhile.

Carlitos, you should've called me(or I should've posted)....I was in Chi-town and Lake Geneva from Wed. through Sunday for a wedding and itching to kite...didn't bring my gear, but it was perfect 12m on Lake Geneva while I was on my boat...tried tracking down a 12m waroo Blake sold to our buddy last year, but no luck..too much drinking...

one dude likes twin-tips better in the waves...

everyone is entitled to thier own opinion though...

Next time look at www.kiteridersllc.com Way more friendly and helpful!!!!

I'm originally from Chicago (never kited there though), and I'm almost positive that they don't even staff lifeguards at the beaches in October (I think they run Memorial Day - Labor Day). So, there wouldn't be anyone to check in with and I don't know who would be enforcing any policies at this time of year. I'm guessing you can just go out and hit it, then play dumb if anyone hassles you.

I used to live in Chicago, before kiting was invented. Pretty urban beaches. North side, tons and tons of bikers, rollerbladers, etc. South side, umm... watch your back, don't leave stuff on the beach.

Don't think you're missing much quality riding in Chicago proper. If you get away from the city there are some nice Lake MI beaches that probably don't require streamers.

Or you could skip it and contemplate how much happier your life is that you don't live there Very Happy

Carlitos,

didn't realize you haven't gone yet... Wink

I would check windonthewater.com for current wind, and check out the Madison forum kiteridersllc.com It seems like they ride a lot more(or post) anyways...and a lot of the riding is so close, they end up in Chi and Lake Michigan, etc.

There are a bunch or good N/NE or S/SE spots on Lake Michigan....not too far from the city, just north of downtown.
Wakeagan, Zion, Kenosha to name a few....
If the wind is off-shore(N/NW or S/SW) then head over to Michigan or Indy, (2-ish hours)

but the Madison forum usually gets back to you pretty quickly. Talk to Jens or Bob on the Madison forum kiteridersllc.com and he will def. give you the low-down on where to ride....they are out all the time rain or shine like us. Twisted Evil

I dont' think they have those stupid rules after labor day weekend. I kited in Zion, Waukegan, Michigan city and etc. Everything was fine. The only place that require to report to the life guard is montrose beach which is right outside of chicago. I doubt they have life guard there now. Kiting on montrose beach is pretty sweeet though!

yeah, the thought of some hottie chicago lifeguard, chewing my ass because of streamerless kiting, is more than just a little worth it.

jake (and all the other great lake riders), is it worth dragging my golf clubs all the way to chi in october?

Hmmmmm, that's a tough one.....When I was there last week it was hot, sunny, cold, rainy...So, might be better off calling some places to see if they rent clubs...

think there might be a problem with are sign in process or the admin address. Was riding yesterday with some boys from Mich. that had the same problem. Hopefully we get it fixed so you could all sign up. No bad blood here, we wouldnt ignore you guys.

Who ever is coming next week or whenever you mentioned, hit me up or shout out on the forum, we'd love to see some gorge pros throw down. Falls are best season.

Have a look here too for
a brief explaintion of the streamer thingy
