Interesting perspective on Chicago from the gorge crew and the Lake Geneva transplant....tone changed a bit once the threads crossed.
I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and I don't kite Montrose but I do respect the efforts of the ones who work to keep the beach open to kiting(with a few rules). Montrose is the ONLY beach allowing kiting in Chicago. To come from out of town and knowingly ignore the rules would be.........
There are numerous sites on Lake Michigan in Illinois, Wisonsin, and Michigan where we kite(without streamers). For the most part I kite alone or with 2 or 3 other kiters. During our seasons(primarily fall and spring) there are virtually no other people on the area beaches. Windswept and empty. Lake Michigan is big and cold, not for everyone!! The Michigan coastline is scattered with dunes, and often reminds me of the area around Florence, Oregon. And yes it has the shorebreak to "crush you", and the cold water to "numb you".
I've spent a number of summers in the Gorge, years on Maui, and several winters on the Texas coast. Yet, I find myself enjoying the shit out of kiting Lake Michigan, quite honestly, it's my favorite place to kite. Maybe it's because every session is so different....wind direction, launch, wave height, kite size....or maybe it's because of the camraderie of the local kiters. Some would say it's because of the proximity of the kite lauches to microbreweries. Whatever the case, there's no lack of stoke...
If you travel here and want to kite, log on to the Chicago forum and try to make a friend not an enemy.........it's just wierd when people start talking out of both ends..... |

Hey West! Welcome.
Some of the comments that you guys might have found offensive were really just jokes referring to past threads. Like the Stickies... We had a big discussion on stickies a while back. Just a tongue in cheek joke not really meaning anything.
We have very little regulation here, other than at the Event Site in Hood River. The streamer thing just sounds pretty foreign. I realize it's better than losing the launch entirely! |
