Tue Jul 22, 08 10:42 am Kite repair question... |
|
|
OK, so I'm going to take a stab at fixing my friends OR 10m that got a nice round hole punched in the LE. I have a patch kit for both the bladder and the LE nylon, so I'm wondering, do you patch both the inside and the outside of the LE, and then what about patching the inside and outside of the bladder? Any tips or tricks to getting a good stick from the dacron patches? _________________ Let's go kite. |

Yes a sandwich patch on the sleeve is preferable. Clean with alcohol. Cut the patches so the corners are rounded...or make a circle. apply them offset so the edges don't line up.
Just patching the outside of the bladder should be adequate. |

Also good to sew along outside edge of patch for durability, especially parallel with the rip.
I've sewn mine by hand, but a triple-stitch zig-zag, by machine, is best.
I used the back-stitch around the patch I made to my $1500 kite. See illustration at

God bless your repairs,

That's really sweet of you. But seeing as how I had a specific question I figured I'd go ahead and ask it. _________________ Let's go kite. |

UPDATE: Everything is put back together, I have three layers patch material on the bladder(1 inside, two outside) and did the same thing. It inflated without any problems and appears to be holding air well, but there is now a rounded bump extending about 1/8" where the hole in the nylon is/was. Is this normal for this type of repair when successful? _________________ Let's go kite. |

| Hmm, doesn't sound too normal. Sounds like the nylon patch material is a little too thin or pliable. You may want to glue a thicker piece of nylon on the inside of the bladder. Either double up a patch or just cut some material from somewhere around the house. It shouldn't bulge out like that and it kind of spells problems IMO. |
