How susceptible are kite bladders to leaks if kites are stored in black roof rack boxes such as the Yakama Rocketbox?
I traveled to the Gorge from Missouri in cool weather with three Naish X4 kites (8, 12, 16). in a Rocketbox. Two days after arriving to a warm, not hot, Gorge a week and a half ago, the 16 had three struts that leaked up near or at the nozzel. The 8 and 12 kites were ok. This was the first time I put the kites in the Rocketbox and the 16 was fine several weeks earlier. I could hear the leaks immediately while pumping, thus the leaks did not occur due to significant pressure.
I suspect the 16 X4 is not worth repairing, as I plan to buy replacement kites anyway.

| Black boxes, summer, and kites are not a good combination. |

I had those kites
the 16 would make a decent windblock
you will so much happier without them
my guess is that they saw the end coming

The glue melts where the round base of the valves connect. Sometimes they will seal back up when they cool off. You can sometime fix by squirting glue around where the edge has de-lammed.
It's the self-deflation feature. |

hmmm, I keep my kites in a rocket box all summer but my is silver. No hotter than the inside of the car I would think.
I would try some airtime self stick valves. OR the better option...new kites!! |

Agreed..new kites. I've done the whole re-glueing on my 2004 SS Fules, but it only works if you remove and reglue the whole valve otherwise the OEM glue will still fail where it hasn't been re-glued sooner or later. In my experience with them, once 1 goes they all start going. |

older naish kites, and many others had this.
Also as kites get older, parts will need maintenance.
It is almost always the valve, but the good news is that it doesn't take much effort to fix. Pull out the bladder, often not more than exactly where the valve is...make sure the bladder is straight and use something like aquaseal to glue it back on. That should to the trick...
and yes heat will kill kites...I have mine stored in a cool place...
