Anyone ever kited there? Got any info? Trying to find good kiting AND good surf (traveling with a surfer) for a trip this winter. Hawaii seems like the likeliest place, I guess. But I wouldn't mind a place that's a bit more remote.

I thought it was wind=good kiting and wind=bad surfing:wink:Wink If I'm correct, the Pacific side of Baja is good for kiting this time of year. Maybe some good locations for surfing too?

SJDS (and the surrounding area) has winds that blow primarily straight offshore. Not the best for kiting. Too bad, because I love that area.

I haven't been to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua but Costa Rica might be a place to put on the list. We went a few years ago and it was awesome for kiting I also heard there is some great surfing there. The kiting was really remote not sure about the surfing though.

Here's PKH's write up about our trip

offshore winds, that's what I remember from Costa rica, too.
Ed, you're right, it definately is ironic that surfer's want offshore and kiters want onshore...

In Bahia Salinas the winds are sideshore because of the bay. Its really windy everyday, only place I have ever been that had guaranteed wind.

Check out the writeup Betty linked above.

Heres a map of the area, it's windy for sure. I am not sure where the good surfing spots are though.

Thanks for the tips bettyboarder and pkh, that's a great write up. I've never been up to bahia salinas. Now I'm going to check out the surfing there... Looks like it needs NW's.

Not sure about bahia salinas for surfing, its in a bay that's really protected so yeah I guess you'd need just the right angle. The real surf action is down south... but Bahia Salinas is a great place to stop for a few days of high wind kiting.

Costa Rica is a country you need multiple trips to really get to see everything. Last time we did Arenal and Bahia Salinas. We didn't make it down to the central pacific coast though, which I'd love to do next time. Eventually would like to see Lake Nicaragua (not far from Bahia Salinas) and also eventually the east coast.

Side-off winds are what kiters want as well for some of the best wave riding you can do. Popular spots include Punta San Carlos in Baja, Mauritius, etc. It cleans the waves up which is good for us and surfers, but also allows us to drift the kite while going down the line without having to move it around. I think we have some examples of this in our Baja video which is in editing limbo during peak season.
