Thu Jun 12, 08 12:48 pm Coast/Jones Fri and Sat ?? |

I am meeting my brother out on the North coast strip, somewhere between Manzanita and Astoria probably. Anyone know how the kiting will be on Friday and Sat, on the N. coast, and/or Jones beach? I don't get to those places often, and don't have a reliable forecast. NOAA says 5-10, which is weak...
Thanks for any advice. |

Your best bet is probably Manzo. Watch for clearing around the beach there. Even if further North is socked in there could be good wind at Manzanita if it clears (satellite images, etc). There's a wind sensor there on ikite. Look for it to start ramping in the early afternoon and you want the wind from the NW. It usually ramps up quickly and peaks at some point between 2-3pm, holding steady until after 5pm at which point it slowly starts to come back down with the best wind shifting further South along the beach. For Fort Stevens just check the Clatsop Spit and Astoria sensors and if they're blowing pretty good and there's not too many clouds it could go. The Clatsop sensor can read a bit high though.
Jones will blow if there's a good pressure gradient from Astoria to PDX and it's not cloudy there. It'll usually ramp up 1-3pm and blow pretty close to dark (like 8pm or something). The sensor there is protected so watch the gust readings and add at least 5mph to that for the WA side of the river which gets more wind. Basically if it's gusting 13mph or more you can ride a 12m or smaller.
Have fun.
Longterm Ikite forecast below...
West wind 22-26 Friday, west wind 21-25 Saturday, west wind 20-24 sunday. Strongest in the Central Gorge.
Onshore flow should hold for the next 3 days with Central Gorge sites getting the strongest wind. Friday west wind builds to 22-26, Saturday west wind 21-25, Sunday west wind 20-24. Coastal sites should see strong NW wind over the weekend.
Friday:
The large scale ridge is weakened by a short wave moving through BC during the day. This should allow Gorge gradients to increase and west wind to build to the 22-26 range in the Central Gorge in the afternoon. Sites east of Hood River should be lighter. Jones Beach should see west wind 16-20. Sauvies NW 10-14 but gusty. North Coast sites NW 11-15 with some clouds. Central Coast sites NW 15-19. South Coast sites NW 21-25. South of Cape Blanco, NW wind 24-28. West swell 4 feet at 11 seconds.
Saturday:
Upper level flow is westerly and the ridge starts to rebound in the afternoon. Weak onshore gradients remain in place. Central Gorge sites should be west in the 21-25 range. Eastern Gorge sites look lighter. NW wind develops along the coast with NW 15-19 North Coast, 21-25 at Manzanita, NW 18-22 Central Coast, NW wind 21-25 South Coast and 25-30 south of Cape Blanco. NW swell 6 feet.
Sunday:
Weak onshore flow should keep the Gorge gradients strong enough for west wind in the 19-23 range in the Central Gorge. Sites east of Hood River will be lighter. NW wind looks strong on the coast with NW wind 16-20 North Coast, NW 22-26 Manzanita, NW 19-23 Central Coast, NW 22-26 South Coast and NW 25-30 south of Cape Blanco. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC
