also if you're a paid member you will get access to the new website we have up and going at http://www.cgka.net and while it isn't much right now, we're working on improving the online community member features, such as adding personal image galleries for members and who knows what else we'll come up with, time permitting. thanks to Phil for hosting the forum as it is making my life wwaaayyy easier because i dont have to deal with setting it up and integrate it into the website.
I'm open to suggestions as to what other member features could be implemented in the website.

Good question. And I think we as the CGKA are to blame for not letting everyone know what we're doing. Of which, I appologize. We are a fairly new organization and don't quite have all the bugs worked out yet when it comes to promoting ourselves. But, I assure you, there is alot going on that is a result of the work of the CGKA. Examples,
Bridge of the Gods
Stevenson to Hood River Blowout
Kiteboarding for Cancer
Rufus Rockpile Rodeo
Sliders/Kicker
Lyle Clean up
Maintaining access to Lyle
June 14th Demo day
Sandbar improvement project
This is just a partial list of the events that are going on. There is a ton of work done behind the scenes with the Port of Hood River, Waterfront Committee and the CGWA to name a few. Ultimately, you have to decide if your $10 is worth it. But, stay tuned and please give us a little patience as we set the foundation for what is going to be a really successful organization. There is a lot of good stuff planned. Thanks.

Plus we got back the month of April to launch and land at the event site.
Stevenson cleanup.
Making headway with the Ports of Stevenson, Hood River, Lyle.
Brett step up and join. Think how much more we could do with your help. |
I still don't have the big picture...
please don't get me wrong, I don't really have a problem paying $10, I just don't see where the $10 is going.
meetings, volunteer cleanups, events that were running before cgka, etc... where would my $10 go?

|
|
Its for beer at the events! Maybe if that is what is needed to keep 20 people working at a cleanup. Or maybe its shovels and gloves. Either way, its OK, just want to account for it.
Actually, TinyE is correct in that the new CGKA web site should have a check book status of the current account balance and the $ allocation for each event. No details from a ACE hardware receipt, just columns with a current planned, actual spent, and remaining balance. Maybe even a list of what was donated and a note of thanks to the contributor and what had to be purchased.
Event: xxx
Donations: Concrete donated from.. $ value..
Event Costs: 3 shovels... $ Value
CGKA Current Inventory from purchases and their location. You don't want to keep buying the same 3 shovels!
Other ideas:
Donation Center
Maybe a listing/donation center for old gear that could be checked out short term by members when theirs is lost. I know we all have a lot of back up stuff that someone could be use for a day in a pinch.
You get a better warm, fuzzy when its clear where your contribution is going. I think TinyE needs a warm, fuzzy.

What events were running before the CGKA? The only one was the blowout and part of your registration fee paid for your membership. The $10 goes to pay for the cost of holding these events and getting them going. We have to pay for event insurance, t-shirts, BBQ's, ect........
I will admit in the past we have paid our $10 and not gotten a lot in exchange. I know your frustration because I felt the same way last year but now we have a great group running the CGKA. We are working very hard to get the CGKA going, we are attending meetings, working towards getting discounts at shops and local businesses, holding clinics, events for our members.
Please keep in mind that we don't make any $$ from the CGKA it's a non-profit. We are all working very hard for free to help protect the access that we have now and get more access for local kiters. The more $$ we raise the more power we have to get things we want like better launches with bathrooms, water, ect.
I like Carol suggestion a lot…. I will talk to Henry about it and get the account information out there to our membership.

So far I think the money has only gone to pay for event insurance + food & drinks at the events and paying for things like diesel at the sandbar cleanup.
But given a strong enough membership the possibilities are endless. From what I know, CGWA has raised and re-distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to improve access points in the Gorge. They also have a full time employee secretary working for them.
We poke fun at windsurfers, but they truly have their shit together in this area way more than we do.
Questions and comments like: "What should CGKA spend its money on?" would be great topics for the new CGKA Membership Forum: http://www.nwkite.com/forums/f-5.html

thanks for the information, i think a finance list would work well... i became the treasurer for my HOA for the same reason...no one knew where all the money was going... obviously, it was going to stuff needed, but no one was keeping track of it.
Again, I don't mind paying the $10, but I think it's important to show where the money is going, and why there is a fee. If it's just for buying beer at volunteer events, then I am less likely to join, however, I understand the requirements around event insurance, etc... and having an organization put the event on versus an individual is usually way better for everyone, so if the majority of the money went towards this, it swings me towards joining.
I know I can't possibly be the only person that was wondering what the $10 goes to.
is the CGKA doing BOG this year? I guess I thought that belonged to Renee Hanks

Just to clear up the beer buying thing.. We have not bought any beer this year (not sure about past). The beer at Stevenson clean up was donated by Naish. Thanks agian to Naish.
BOG is on for this year. The CGKA is helping with it but Steve and someone else is running (sorry I forgot his name).
The CGKA is doing the Blowout agian from Stevie to Hood River. Here is a list of events that are coming up that we are helping with or running might help show what we have been working on. Also Adam is working on the website and he will have the minutes from our meeting posted so everyone can see what we have been working on.

The saying "Dues paying member" means alot more than a simple sign up sheet to join a club.
In order to gain the goals of increased river access, and have a strong voice with local authorities, we need to have a large membership. And a base from around the world, shows the attaction of the area for kiters to come and spend those tourist dollars. Which is what the port is about.
As a non-profit, we have specific requirements for financial reports. These reports will be available to the membership.
The CGKA is fairly new organization, the CGWA has been around a long time, the way we get what we want is by being a big group, and putting our money where our mouths are. That has been a successful stratagy for the CGWA.
We can sure talk the talk, but when it comes to walkin the walk, are we up to the task?
