I know when I was learning, I had a hard time visualizing where my kite would be as I turned it (changed tack). That's why I'd plop in the water like a kook and look around (even though I could turn). Not cool-looking, but a bit safer. Dude probably didn't see you. His afternoon was probably a lot less fun because of that, too. So I'm sure he learned a lesson.
