Sat May 10, 08 8:06 am Stevenson: Launching and Landing yer kite? |
|
|
I used to polesurf at Stevenson. I loved that place , even whilst stepping in goose chunkage, but where and how do you launch and land your kite ?
It's been years, but if my mem serves me right, there wasn't room for that .
Can someone shed some light in me darkened mind ?
Many thank-a-roonies from NoPo funky boonies ,
David

Launch/ landing is one at a time at the rock and is not for beginners since there really is no place to land downwind, except from the cemetery
Check this web cam with it's on and you'll see what I'm talking about.

| If you knew how to fly a kite competently, and self rescue, you could learn to body drag upwind and water start there, if you had a support from a friend-kiter on the water.

Huh? How are you supposed to body drag upwind without launching your kite in the first place???

its an ADVANCED launch site.
You need 2 sometimes 3 peeps to help with lines and weaving around objects. There is still a windshadow and lots of rocks.
The procedure goes something like this:
Get your suit on and get as ready as you can. blow up your kite. lay your lines at the last minute. Have helpers help carry the lines down the embankment. stand out on rocks. have helper launch kite from top of bank. Get out of the way quickly.
Peeps leaving have bump over peeps coming in. When u do come in, roll your lines up as quick as possible and move your kite into the stack.
Please be respectful of others as we are trying to get as many people as we can thru a tight Advanced launch site.
You should have good kite skills and be able to stay up wind before riding here.
Hope that doesnt scare you off. Once you get your skills down, its great riding.

I'm not sure where this question comes from. Yes, you would need to launch your kite first. I'm saying that if you can fly your kite responsibly after many, many hours of practice, you could launch here, and learn to water start with the help of a friend on the water to keep an eye on you. I only say that because I've seen more than one person do it. Someone did it there yesterday, in fact.

Misunderstood you thats all. I thought you were saying that you can avoid the rock launch by body dragging up wind - which doesn't make a lot of sense. But anywhoo - just a misunderstanding.

Thanks, gang .
I think I'll practise waterlaunching my foil at Sauvies. My kite inflates itself on the water, if need be. To bad I didn't own a launchable motorized ramp/slider that I could take out, anchor it for all to partake of, then throw my kite in the water and launch it from there!
I guess I could always dream. Maybe Chemosavi could make one of these babies with a wind-powered tune miester metal mirror wonderland attachment for our listening pleasure!
That picture of the Stevenson kite/board launch doesn't look like I remember.
I remember a grassy, goose-pooped little park with a changing room by the parking area, surrounded by trees, with one rocky outcropping on the West side of launch and the paddlewheel boat dock to the East. Also, someone had built 3 or 4 log cabin cottages on the East side of the mini-park.
Is there a different launch than this now?
David

David,
What might be confusing you is that there are two windsurfing launches in Stevenson. The most popular one for windsurfing (I think called "Bob's Beach".. the one with the little cabins), is nowhere near where people launch kites.
The other windsurfing launch (if I recall) is also a regular boat launch that is further East of Bob's Beach. This boat launch is fairly close to where people launch kites. Do some exploring on the roads East of Bob's Beach and closest to the water. It's hard to miss and you'll know you're there when you enter a long parking lot with confusing one way entrances and exits.

You're thinking of Bob's beach for sure.

The kite launch is here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=45.693126,-121.878076&ie=UTF8&ll=45.69497,-121.880608&spn=0.01172,0.029182&t=h&z=15&iwloc=addr
Not a very friendly launch for any kite.
A foil is even harder to launch there, especially if its busy with people coming in and out of the small launch and jumping nearby.
Can't say I haven't seen it done though!
If you're thinking about launching there for the first time try to time it so that you have the place to yourself (ie early on a weekday)
That way you can figure out what works best for you without getting in people's way.
I know you have good kite skills, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Just bring Curt with you for support, especially if you have a small PWC.

| terremoto: I re-read what I wrote, I see what you mean, haha. It is misworded. In other stevenson news I just saw someone take off and stay upwind, barely. I wonder if my 11m will work today. I don't have a glide yet. The water doesn't even look like there's whitecaps... I wonder if the wind will continue to pick up. Is anywhere rideable in the gorge today?
