One trick to learning downloops is downlooping to waterstart.
To go left, start with the 5 deg to the left (from overhead).
Now pull hard with the right hand (commit) and do a normal waterstart (maybe head downwind a bit more). Try this on a light day.

one subtle thing about down looping that I have found. When you pull on the bar to initiate the loop make sure the other side of the bar is pushed up all the way up. I found that when I first learned to do this I had too much tension in the apposing steering line and it slowed the loop down. Instead of going all the way around it would just dive into the water. So pull on one side and push on the other.

Here's another section I forgot to add-in:
Steeze
----------
- Get boardshorts, make sure they cover your knees well (go up a size if necessary)
- When the camera is out, check those shorts, pull em down if they get bunched up
- Get a t-shirt or water jersey to wear too, baggy is cool, make sure its brightly colored
- Try unhooking even just to ride around and carve, its good practice and will look great in the photos
----
Totally serious with this... steeze can be the difference between an ok photo, and a magazine quality one. And its really not even a matter of skill, just being relaxed and some fashion sense.
A bright shirt that contrasts well with your shorts and surroundings will make it much easier for the camera to focus quickly and will also make the photograph POP more.

Yes, it would be cool to get comment from the O.G.'s of Steeze, the Inept Crew!

Phil, I'm on it dude. Gonna order some XXXL shorts and show off lotsa ass, but at least my shorts will extend to my feet and cover up those unsightly knees. I apologize to all that had to suffer through the pics this weekend. Maybe Phil shoulda blurred the knees before posting. What if some kids are watching that get the wrong sense of style???
PS I wore the shirt on Sunday, but weather didn't cooperate for a photoshoot.

Haha yeah a knee is way more unsightly than a hairy ass crack in boardsports seemingly...
Though if you have a nice long baggy shirt it will help with crack issues... really we don't have to worry about that stuff until the warm water shows up. Before then a bunched up shorts showing knee is our biggest enemy. Worse than no boardshorts almost I'd say.
I had the focus a bit messed too which caused some problems, next time they will be crystal clear even if you are wearing a full hooded black wetsuit night kiting. Seriously though, the bright shirts do help a lot, especially on gloomy days.
Still not pinpointing on you specifically gene, we can all learn some more. Especially you can learn more from me, the guy who doesn't actually kite.

Haha, nah, you kite man. You're just taking a short beer drinking/photo break
After looking back at the pics I agree. It looks like I'm wearing some 80s tennis shorts
Oh, well, live and learn. Expect to see lots more crack in the near future.

Nak,
I have a new 14 T2 that I have been out on twice this year: once east once west. The thing pulls like a monster but once you stall it it takes considerable reef to get it pulling again. I would like to try a toeside downloop turn with it but not in 50 degree water.
I share your pain with this whole "send the kite and pop" jumping thing. Not even daylite under the board. My kids tell me I send the kite like a pussy, but it seems like its moving pretty fast to me. Anyway if you make some sense of this jumping/downlooping stuff post the wisdom.
