Jesus, you guys talking about 40+ being old are making me feel old! I thought 50- was still young... Sad

Last time I truly got my ass kicked on a mountain bike was in Costa Rica riding with Norm (a CR local who frequents the Gorge for windsurfing)... He likes to carry on conversations the whole ride up every hill, no matter how steep, while I am just trying to get air in my lungs so I don't collapse. At the time I was 23, it was his 60th birthday. Shocked

Back on the Trix thing... Having a bum shoulder, I am convinced that handle passes are not for me. Maybe a raley to blind someday.

Kiteloops are fun and relatively mellow if you start off in lighter winds and bigger kites. If you can do a backroll you can do a backroll kiteloop fairly easy in the right wind.

Unhooked tricks are fun and look cool. They also make you a safer kiter by getting you used to the process of unhooking while powered. A good raley still makes the cover of the magazines. Some of the really simple seeming unhooked tricks are actually really hard to pull off right and you could spend years on those (powered raley kite low, unhooked board grab, legit sbend.)

A good day in the waves, awesome... and you could work on strapless skills for years and probably never stop learning. I still have a long way to go there.

I hate to admit it but I still have the most FUN just boosting around. You can't help but chuckle when your 40 feet up and everything looks smaller. Very Happy Downloop forward roll transition, super fun, and a little scary when you go big.

at 43, each season i just try to achieve the level of skill i had the year before. so many things to learn. my expectations for myself are less now. seems like each year i have to rehab more things. i want to push forward, push past the my limits. yet i work more, own my business, wife and two kids. never enough time. kiting fuels my life. i just try to get a stoke at every session. its all good. conversations on the beach. drinking a red stripe from phil yesterday was a great non wind kite session. waves will be my next frontier. strapless maybe. soon it will be teaching my son. just gotta keep getting out there. have fun. boost some air. front and back rolls. kite loops and down loops. stay uninjured. meet new friends on the beach.

peace.

Some sound advice for sure. As I think about it more I realize that I suffer from a common pitfall where if you excel at something and define yourself by that activity, as you get older and are less competitive, you can tend to beat yourself up about it. There was a time when rock climbing was all I was about and I trad climbed at a very high level, then came doing absolutely psycho stuff on my DH mountain bike. Now, I'm just another middle aged guy on a kiteboard. ---Jesus I sound like a whiny baby.

Not sure what the point is, I guess realizing that your body can't sustain such punishment anymore is a bit of a tough pill to swallow. I probably wouldn't be thinking about it if THERE WAS SOME FREAKIN WIND!!!

Just remember Robby Naish is older than you - that should be all the inspiration you need.

Like pdxmb, I'm also going through in my mind what I'll try to add to my bag of trix this year and the associated injury risks.

What are opinions about what harness type provides the best trade-off for freedom of movement vs. risk of injury? ...waist, seat, board shorts, impact vest...

in terms of harness, I wear a seat harness. It doesn't seem that restrictive to me, keeps the pull low, and never hurts my ribs when I boost. I also never heard of anyone cracking or bruising their ribs from a seat harness riding up.

Other harness just hurt my back Sad

I dont know the statistics but it sure seems to me that there are less injuries with unhooked tricks vs hooked-in tricks. Please correct me if I am wrong. My goal this year is to UNHOOK, going to perform a donkey dick ectomy when I done with this post.

That's what I like about my seat harness, too...although the leg loops can get things uncomfortably bunched up every now and then Confused . I've only tried a waist harness once or twice and it would take some getting used to. One downside I perceive with the seat harness is that the bar hook sits lower than on a waist harness, making it harder to hook back in. That last little bit of getting the chicken loop down to the hook is always the hardest, even an inch or so seems like it makes a difference. Since I'm hoping to do more unhooked riding this season, this is something I'm thinking about in addition to the mobility restriction. I'm wondering if an impact vest harness would help with both of these issues.

Funny memory: When I began instructing Jets in the USAF I was 27. All the guys in my flight called me "Pops" at first because I was so damned old... Very Happy

Hey PMB, not much time left on the inet access down here, but when I get back we'll get you pointed in the right direction for some wakestyle stuff. It's not as punishing as other types of tricks. You'll be stoked.

man, you guys crack me up. what?

nah, guys, its cool, i dont really blame ya', living in a society defined by its young, or more correctly defined by design by commercial interests that have learned how to best market their products.

old is the new young. Wink

and nothing reveals this collective mindset as much as posts like this-aging warriors who still have not learned that NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT YOUR TRICKS!!!!!!!

kiting is not about handle-passes, not by a yard, not to a lot of us. and all those lists of stuff to approve upon this year?

c'mon fellas, do you really want your kiting to be like your work with yearly reviews and people you have to please to get the goodies. is anybody listening? anyone?

by the way, my dick is way bigger than yours. and i went to a better highschool. and my house is larger, my car faster, my wife better looking. . .

how many of you throw that sorry sheit way across the river as opposed to right in the wash at the edge of the kitebeach? No?

Man, if this shit wasnt funny it would be sad and scary as hell. word.

It's dudes like Jimmi that are funny. Let em talk about their tricks and such, but the moment you come back with your bullshit... It tells everyone that you really have a deep seeded jealousy... Now that is funny shit.
