Anybody have insight on good spots to hit near San Francisco? I'm traveling down this week to visit my brother and have never been to Cali before. Planning to drive back to Oregon on 1 and 101 ....any suggestions on must ride spots especially this time of year? Thanks! |

my wife and i did the drive down the coast last august-i have no idea what it means to hit these spots in early spring, but here's what i know:
1. there is a lagoon just north of mckinnleyville (sic) on the cali coast ("big lagoon?") that would be a stellar flat water spot with any north-northwest wind. the locals ride it and in the waves nearby.
2. we hit crissy field marina in sf, one of those places that you have to kite before they wipe off the drool. not a par-tic-u-lar-lee friendly place to kite, with a 5 knot ebb tide heading out of the golden gate and 6 foot swell and cold water, and big toothy fish breeding nearby, but with the south tower of the gg bridge on the port tack and russian hill and the palace of fine arts on starboard, it is def memorable.
3. bodega bay was cool, flat water in the bay and little waves just outside the jetty, this place works in nw winds and is north of sf about 50mi.
4. waddel is just south on the way to s.cruz.
check out the local forum, bay area kitesurfing or something like that.

| Check out Eel river near Loleta. We stopped by last summer - no wind but the place had potential (ignoring the rusting autos from the 50's on the beach). |

| Unfortunately, the forecast for this week doesn't look very good. If you get some good NW flow going you can ride Crissy and Ocean Beach in SF, 3rd Ave by the San Mateo bridge, Sherman Island by Rio Vista in the Sacramento river delta, Waddell Creek a bit North of Santa Cruz (wave spot). Half Moon Bay can also work on Southerly storm winds or real strong NW winds. Check the bay area forum for more info. Good luck! |
