Here is your chance to vote on what happens at Stevenson.
Would you like the long shrub at the bottom of the hill to stay or go?
Stay..
Go...

Come on you guy's
The shrub's are vital and stabilize the bank.
I agree the shrubs are a pain in the ass if you don’t know how to manage your lines. I don’t mind trimming them back but to remove them would make the Stevenson launch much more accessible and less daunting to entry level kiters.
The local kiters don’t seem to mind the shrubs at all. I think that they help keep people from just dropping their lines at the beach. When you come in from a session, you simply roll up you lines its that simple.
NO DO NOT REMOVE THE SHRUBS!
Shrubs have sole's too!

I say they should GO.
Removing them would allow people to launch kites closer to the water, out of the tree shadow.
This is safer, especially when the water is low.
There has to be another way to stabilize the bank.

I vote to keep 'em. A little trim on the top around the 3rd week of June is usually all it takes to keep them from being too tall and causing line problems. I like the green as well! Don't want to just look at rocks all the time! Besides, a little bit of challenge keeps things interesting.

What about trimming them down to like 1-2 feet... that should last through the season and make the launch easier.
If there was some chance that they are helping the eroding of the hill then it might be good to keep them around, but it seems like we've had experts stating the contrary.

>Most beginners have problems with the lines no matter where they are. Cutting the bushes down down will not stop their line tangles, it will just encourage more beginners to try and result in more launch problems.
>None of the locals have any problems if they are trimmed, so trim, don't remove.
>Anything standing on that point all winter long through the Easterlies deserves to live.
>If Shy and the locals can launch over the icy rock and froozen bushes in the winter, seems the summer suntan unicorns can rough-it over the warm grass and little green leaves to the sandy beach.
>If we remove the shrubs, what would replace them to stabilize the hillside? I think shrubs are better than tires, cement, large rocks, rail-road ties, or green treat 6x6's.
Save the shrubs!!!!

Just a few comments.
One, those are not native shrubs, they are an invasive species that continues to spread throughout the snake and Colombia river systems. Ten years ago we hardly ever came across them, and now they all of the place. They are on Washington's class B invasive species list. Leaving them in place only spreads their seeds more.
Two, those plants are not stabilizing that slope. If you want the long winded explanation of why I believe this , I would be happy to provide it...as long as the requester presents his/her reasons as to why they believe they are stabilizing the slope.
They are not a huge problem, but they can be a pain. My real rub is that they are an invasive plant.

Ok - taking PDXMB's knowledge on this they should go. But I would like to see them replaced with something native that's green if possible.
PDXMB: Karl at the Port would be happy to discuss ideas of what to do with any of his plants on the Port property. I think he believes they are stabilizing the bank but if you can show him they are not and what to plant or do in their place (if it's needed) he'll do it. He'll be at the cleanup and you guys will see that he is very approachable and that he takes a lot of pride in how the waterfront looks and in how it works.

Can you post some names and pics of replacement shrubs that will be kite friendly, hold the bank, and survive the harsh winter winds? And the prerferred height is around 3ft. Seems like you know more about the plant life in the NW than the rest of us so educate us so we can make a better decision.
Thanks for your time helping us!

Roger the Shrubber: Are you saying Ni to that old woman?
King Arthur: Um, yes.
Roger the Shrubber: Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say Ni at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land, nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress in this period in history.
King Arthur: Did you say shrubberies?
Roger the Shrubber: Yes, shrubberies are my trade. I am a shrubber. My name is Roger the Shrubber. I arrange, design, and sell shrubberies.
