Columbia needs more monitoring of poisons

The Oregonian has a rather lengthy article in todays edition concerning toxins running the distance from Columbia River to the Pacific. The item is focused moreover on fish reproduction etc...

With PCBs, DDT and mercury in a continuous flow is there an advocacy for the safety and health of those who use the waters for recreational sporting and leisure past times?

If not, is there a governing body, perhaps on the local level, who can be influenced to test samples and publish levels of toxins?

How do you all determine if taking to the water is risky on any given day?

The impression of the Oregonian feature has the Gorge defined as a liquid brothel.

OMIGosh, I clicked a url on a members post that lead me to the official KB4C, website. WoW!!! What a wonderful collaboration of intellect and athletics. The combined efforts of everyone participating to make a difference in the lives of those stricken by Cancer is surely unprecedented.

Some of you possess Mad Skills to be able to organize such an event as last years. Other than that awesome bank taken for a great cause, the wealth of experience and education....daymn!!!

Have you heard the Columbia Riverkeeper is conducting a study this summer/2008. Anyone here who has suffered effects of, "River Nose", can supply their experience by filing a ,River Use and Ailment Form.

Check out, there was a court order to record spills at the lower Columbia and various sites. The project began, April 10, 2007. Of course the mandate was to protect the little fishes.

Don't take this the wrong way or anything...but I can handle the fact that your excited about kite boarding, but to scared to actually introduce yourself, it is only slightly annoying that you can't use the search button to look up topics that have already been discussed, and yes, I can even handle the fact that you have a unicorn as your avatar. But, for the love of god, that has to be the stupidest HDT quote ever.

Don't get me wrong, HDT was bad ass in some respects but he was not as hard core as you might think. Are you aware that his house on walden pond where he "sought solitude to gain greater insight into society" was only a mile from town and his wife and mother came to his house everyday to cook his meals and clean his house. Not exactly a spartan existence if you ask me.

It's all about competition for habitat. If you want clean rivers and happy non-stressed fish then we (humans) need to cease our existence.

Everything we do as humans has a negligible effect on the plant that we are currently polluting.

What’s really scary is that most people haven’t got a clue as to the amount on contamination that is currently slow leaching into our water ways. All a direct result of the Industrial/technological boom of the early 1940 to 1950.

Do you have any idea how many proposed super fund sites we have along the Columbia River? I won’t even mention the "Non Point Sources" from agricultural farms, road ways, and run off from cattle grazing pastures.

We as humans are all part of the problem. The only thing we can’t do to help clean up our water ways is to kill your self. That’s one less person on the earth contributing to the degradation of the planet

The influence of a great character/writer/noteable I think is in the manner their works create provocative thoughts and stimulate growth. Whatever the individual intpretation of the text is.

I used to work for CH2MHILL Applied Sciences Environmental Lab - We got commissioned by the DEQ to do a study on fish from Grand Coulee up to Canada. Trace Metals, mercury, VOCs, PCBs and some other stuff. One of the largest fish studies in recent history I guess... Took us a year to process all the fish they collected, but I think they ran out of money and weren't able to actually analysis the samples cuz I haven't heard anything.
