I've been daydreaming about kiting all day and the Sauvie sensor popped into me head. Does anyone know if ikitesurf actually made any progress towards getting a sensor out there?
They kind of say the same shit every year. And there prices nearly doubled last year
Just curious if anyone knows anything.

When I lived in PDX and kited at Sauvies I bugged them every year. Like you said it is the same lame excuses. No homeowner near the launch will agree to put the sensor on "their" property. Individuals and ikitesurf / windsurf staff have asked them repeatedly to no avail.
Now, from what I understand they could put a wireless sensor there, but they always say it is too expensive. Perhaps they should take some of their profits and put one up there.
If anyone wants a sensor at Sauvies, email ikitesurf and ask for a wireless sensor to be placed there. The more requests they get the better chance of it happening.

does anyone know how much it would cost to put our own sensor out there?
I found a wireless and computer less system that plugs directly into a router and feeds realtime data to weather underground site for $325 but you would have to find some way to get the router plugged into the internet.
A simple car baterry and solar pael set up would cost around $125.

I'm not sure that would work with all the different protocals and such. There is a company making wireless, solar powered routers for $150. One of those and two parabolic antennas ($100) can relay a signal up to 8 miles.
I also came across an old post about Sauvie island developing a wifi network. Does anyone in the computer world no anything about that?
The post was from a portland city employee named Dat Nguyen. Phil, you know that guy?

Yes, it is a DEQ sensor, however it is somewhat wind shaddowed. SI is a working mans dream, but when it is good at SI it is even better at the coast.

That sensor is uber shadowed and at time,s only sends a signal every two hours.

Yeah, agreed. I usually trust the Scappoose sensor more than the Sauvies sensor just because of that issue.
BTW, has anyone tried kiting near the turnaround at the very north end of the dirt road at Sauvies? The place I'm talking about is at the trail head for "warrior rock" near the north end of the island.
If it's NE at all, the turnaround seems like it could be an even better spot than the traditional kite beach at Walton beach.
I've noticed (from jet skiing) that the wind always seems to be a lot stronger on the stretch of the river from about the paper mill in Scappoose up to St Helens than it does at Walton beach. And the wind there starts to pick up about an hour or so before it does at Walton.
The only problem is that if there's not an easterly component to the wind, you'd probably get rotor off the trees near the launch. But once you got away from the shore, I think you'd be fine.

Never tried down the beach that far. I have kited at the nudie beach though when it seemed that people at the kite beach were struggling.
In regards to the available sensors..they all kind of suck. I think jsut about everyone has driven out there when the scaptown sensor or the freemont bridge look great and you get out there and there is nothing...
I think it would be a pretty cool project to get a sensor out there. In all seriousness, who would help kick down some cash to set one up?

I'd kick in some if there was a good place to park it.

St Helens Marina used to have a weather station
but I called them and it is no longer.
The Marina is about 5 miles away.
134 N River St St Helens, OR 97051-2000 503-397-4162
That is Sand Island across from the boat docks.
Could be a fun downwinder if the drive wasn't so far around for shuttle vehicles.
