Has anyone kited near the hatch? How are the winds and swell?

The hatch and "the former mill complex wants to be redeveloped into a new resort comprised of 250 new vacation homes, recreational amenities and retail areas serving resort guests, locals and visitors alike."

If they can spend the big $$ on new windsurfing facilities, then it seems a kiteboarding launch isn't asking for too much. Otherwise, do we want it?

What's everyone's opinion on building out the Hatch into the Broughton Landing development?

Can anyone attend the meeting and suggest kiteboarding facilities or represent this forum's kiteboading opinion? CGKA - can someone attend? Anyone can speak for 3 minutes and voice their/our opinion.

Meeting is: Gorge Commission Hearing on Tuesday, February 12 at the Hood River Inn on the proposed Broughton Landing Development. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Here's a link to their promo web site. http://www.broughtonlanding.com/
Here what they are saying the rec benefits will be.
Note: nothing about kiteboarding.

Recreation Protections & Improvements
• Expand public parking connected to the Hatch with a safe pedestrian tunnel below SR 14.
• Solve the existing RV problem at the Hatch with new RV parking and campsites on privately-owned land nearby.
• Convenient new services for windsurfers such as a new general store/coffee shop/pub and a small shop renting and repairing windsurfing equipment near the Hatch.
• Prevent overcrowding of the Hatch with a new, separate launch site (Broughton Beach) mid-way between the Hatch and Swell City.
• Protect water quality through state-of-the art wastewater treatment technology that will prevent discharge of contaminants into the river.
• Irrigation for the Hatch to keep the park green during the period of maximum Windsurfing activity.
• Prevent wind shadow by locating new buildings away from the river.
• Preserve Cheap Beach for public use.
• Create new windsurfing launch sites at the Hatchery by expanding the Hatchery State Park.
• Create extensive public trail network connecting shoreline with top of Underwood Bluff.

I'm not convinced I'm in favor of the development and can't attend a 9:30 am meeting in HR, but I can send an email and that counts too!

If they build it without including kiteboarding access, they may actually close down what we already have access to. I know a few people have a secret spot of kiting there, but that access may get closed with retail shops or don't step on the grass signs if we don't speak up.

You can send the developer and the Gorge Commission an email directly and let them know if they are going to allow the development, it should include kiteboarding. The more emails they get, the better the chance of gettting a facility there if it goes through.
Here's the links:

Email the developer at: sdsjss@gorge.net

On-line email to the Gorge Commission at: http://www.gorgecommission.org/contactus.cfm

Thanks for the info!

This project has the potential to completely destroy the National Scenic Act as we know it. While everyone is concentrated on fighting the Casino in Cascade Locks, which will be within City Limits and not in the National Scenic Area, the Broughton project will set a precedence for developments outside of the city centers. SDS owns land all over the gorge, including the most polluted sites, and they aren't doing anything to clean them up. Well, besides adding a huge number of RV spots, $$ condos, and a private beach to one of them. I am completely opposed to the Broughton site...

Should we put it to a vote and maybe send a CGKA rep (if there are any takers) to voice the outcome.

I am also opposed to the development of the Broughton site, but money talks. Its all about cash flow regardless of "The National Scenic Act"
Trust me this project will push forward. Sad

We do need to voice our opinion regarding Kiteboarding access/launch.

I cant make the meeting, but I will send an email to all three of the following address: sdsjss@gorge.net, http://www.gorgecommission.org/contactus.cfm
http://www.broughtonlanding.com/Contact_Us/

Some of you guys may not want to kite at the hatcher but it sure is nice to have the door open to you if you want to in the future.

The kiteboarding community needs to pull together on this one or one of the best launches inaccessable.

there is serious, then there is mind bending...

so what toxins are leaching from the mill (creosote?) and the development will fix that? or do they just build on the toxic soil

Great example of SDS...and their "stewardship" of the Gorge
