Went snowmobiling this weekend. Just rented a few with some friends from Seattle. I ended up crashing mine into a little stream that had melted all the snow. Wasn't to bad, stream was like 3 inches deep.
Was super fun and we hit 85 MPH on the flat long stretches of trails. I can say that you don't need much of a sled for trail riding. The guide's sled of choice was a 400CC with a track about as long as my arm. If the trail up to the Plains of Abraham is all groomed between storms, very little sled is needed.

The trail to the plains is def not groomed. You are on the road for the first 6 miles, than you cut up the lahar.
I've been buried tits deep up there several times, and its not a place for any short track sleds when there is any fresh.
You could make a girls sled work when its bulletproof, but that it doesn't lend itself to good kiting conditions.
Flipping those things over and getting them stuck is just part of the deal.

looks like you had your hands full..
I have been in that situation many of times in WYO... The creeks are dangerous cuz' you'll just fall through to the water... WE used to call my sled "the pig" and belive me, getting a 600lbs machine out is a biaaatch...
* always bring tow straps  , and some beer.

I was zipping back and forth up the snow banks on the sides, trying to jump the crap the grooming machine pushed to the side and land in the soft snow. I got a little ambitious, that's all. Was super fun, we rented from Mt Hood Adventures in Govy, would recommend to anyone as they were awesome.

Your sled made it though right? How long was your track and what size engine?

For back country riding you want at least a 700 with a 136" track. A 800 or 900 and a 151" or 159" makes it easier.
Don't get me wrong you can get almost any machine back there..... in the spring when the snow is very hard.
For Powpow you can't have enough power and a light enough machine.

My sled was a 700 w/ 136 track, and it made it most of the time, except when we got it buried. Damn I miss that!
