so i just have a few questions!
how would i size my kites when im snowkiting. do you go bigger or smaller or the same. my regular kite durring the summer in the gorge is a 10m like 18-25mph roughly. im like 170lbs. so if i were in the same wind but on a snowboard what size kite would i fly?

If the snow is normal(not like wet cement), you should probably size down a size from what you would use on the water.
7m/8m for you in that wind you stated.....or even a 5m when it's super lit.
but I am talking SLE/bows....
If the snow is cold and dry...your board moves across the snow pretty quick with very little drag.
maybe the pro's will chime in......?

I know I fly my 17.5 machine alot from oregon to montana and utah .....machine gets pumped up the most..... get one now days new complete for less than 400 bucks... 
low winds is the most common in most enjoyable riding conditions.
I have ridden a 7 once and a 10-11 some.
mostly big kite and medium rockboard. 
looking favorable for a crater assualt this coming weekend.

Having a kite with a easy kill system (one line leash or 5th line) is good for safety, I am not sure how safe I'd feel hooked up suicide style. Getting drug on snow is a lot worse then getting drug over water, especially when you mix in rocks and ice and shit. Adam went for a pretty big drag behind the foil.
Having a kite that reverse relaunches easy is good too. The foils were a real pain when they landed upside down. It could be that we were all inexperienced with it but it seemed like they weren't nearly as user friendly as the LEI kites. Especially when you consider the mess of bridles.

you can pretty much use a small kite (6m-10m) to get pulled around on any snow condition. But once you start wanting to jump and do tricks you need a kite adaquate to the wind speed....its mainly for lift.
also,
you might want to change your stance to a more (duckfeet) position, it helps stop the front foot pressure which can lead to digging in. I setup my stance at 20 degree's.

good info sol-flyer... any more tips? we were all talking about moving the backs of our bindings so they aren't so forward, thought that might help for not over edging.
I found it real hard to get into that comfy position like I am on water without sinking edges or plowing to a stop. Practice makes perfect?

this is partly due to the sidecut radius of your snowboard, Which is why some kite companies are coming out with a kite-specific board. I also think that edgeing upwind is a lot easier (side-cut radius), Its important to remember the true wind direction. This makes the timing to get those floaty jumps a bit tricky.
As for bindings,...
turn your stance forward (duckfeet) to help get that extra torso twist. (see illustration below). to much and your back foot wont respond correctly while riding toeside
I ride with soft boots, and prefer bindings with a low-cut back. This helps allow me to shift my weight around. this can lead to sprained ankles,...you've been warned

Curious to hear from the snow guys - What sort of wind speeds do you put up say a 10m Ozone foil.
I have a couple 5m foils (Not sheetable) that I can barely hang onto after ~17mph! It seems like they'd pull fine in the snow around 10-15 mph?

i have a 3m wasp that is 2 line, it pulls about as hard as a 6m! I've gone out with it a few times in the beginning, i dont like how they collapse when not filled with air. Takes a different kind of flying.
plus,
I felt more comfertable with the way my 4 line "C" kites fly

We're heading out crater lake this saturday(wind permitting)
Mt ashland has about 5 inches  Its usually a late bloomer, but is the best snowkiting place hands down.

Foils have great low end grunt for their size. A 10m Ozone should get you going on the snow in 5-6 kts and its range should take you to about 22-25 kts.

| I just rig and go. Pick a size Holly and go. Dont think too much about it. I used both my 9 and 12 all last season. you have plenty of days under a kite you should know by now. Just go and fly your kite. There are so many open killer spots around and even in bend.
