so with this cold weather have anyone noticed any ice hanging up there??

Ice climbing is fickle here in the banana belt, and those scenic drive waterfalls are easy pickin.

thanks.

it has to get REALLY cold for the gorge ice to form. Down into the teens for a couple days in a row. I'm not joe ice climber but I did get several pitches of gorge ice in december of 95'. Almost everything was frozen but the windchill was like 20 below. Man it was cold.

sick fun, but cold.

I used to do a lot of climbing, but for me the only way to ice climb is top roping. The ice around here is a little too sketch for me to want to lead climb.

I have climbed the gorge ice two years ago and the only other time it froze since I lived in oregon was like 1997? I saw it as I was driving home to minnesota for x-mas to climb ice, so no stop.

Most routes in the gorge are multi pitch. no top roping, plus you haven't really climbed the ice if you haven't lead it or cleaned it. Wink

I have been in the slc area where you could put your fist between the ice and the rock because the ice gets melted out.

so no ice??

usually it takes a 4 day stretch of cold to get the lower flowing water ice pitches to freeze up. the high flow stuff doesn't freeze unless its cold cold for week plus periods.

I think 96 was the epic year - I remember icebergs forming in the Columbia (I not making this up). It lasted about 10 days then all gone.

But you will get several good days most years - like one more week of below freezing nights, the cold wind sets it up pretty quick - there was ice forming around ponds at Jones Beach on the way back from the coast.

Yeah - good call Shay - that is the Ouray ice park
