Something I read off a local news website.... Shocked

http://www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_101507_animals_great_white_shark_seal_sea_lion.173d10e79.html

I think my coast sessions are over.... Shocked
I'll stick to the kitty ponds from now on....

Great white shark chomped on seal & sea lion off Ore. Coast

SEASIDE, Ore. – It wasn’t a good weekend for two mammals on the northern Oregon coast – a seal and a sea lion both washed up with what appear to be major shark bites from a great white, aquarium officials said.

On Friday, a dead harbor seal drifted onto the beach at Seaside with a two-foot chunk taken out of its back. And since Saturday, an extremely unhappy California Sea Lion has been resting on a beach with a sizable wound.
In both cases, officials believe it was a shark -- likely a great white shark – that attacked.

"It could have been an orca," said Keith Chandler with the Seaside Aquarium, "but it's more likely a shark. A killer whale would likely mess the thing up a lot more, or eat the whole thing."

The harbor seal with a gaping hole in its back was a full-grown adult, probably about six years old, officials said.

"They often swim upside down, so they probably weren't paying attention when the shark came down on it," Chandler said. "I've never seen a hole that big in a seal."

"The entire backbone is gone," said Tiffany Boothe, with the aquarium and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

Meanwhile, a full-grown sea lion has been nursing itself on a beach with a shark bite in lower back.
Also: Recent suspected shark attack not scaring surfers

"It's one disgruntled sea lion," Chandler said. "I couldn't get too close to look at the wound 'cause it threatened to bite me."

The tear is mostly in the sea lion’s fur, where some of the flesh was torn. It’s about one foot wide and very infected.

"It's oozing a lot of green," Chandler said.
Some great whites do wander around the waters off Oregon, but not too many, according to Boothe. She believes warmer water this summer brought more sharks closer to shore.

loks like positive pictures , If they were really hungry the seals would be fully eaten.

Yep sharks eating seals is normal coastie behavior.

if they started attacking boats ,then I will worry.

thats why I don't kite by rookeries, aka sealion cave buffet.

or at the rivermouths aka jetties. Twisted Evil not a good swimming hole.

sharks in the ocean! who knew?

if this sort of thing worries you, there is a sure fire test to see if sharks are about.

dip your finger in the water.

then stick it in your mouth.

if it tastes salty, there are sharks.

shark bite 2.jpg being further evidence of the sharks' discerning taste and preference for only the best-flavored meat, I continue to recommend a coastie watersports diet that includes NO foods familiar to sharks. Avoid sushi at all costs! Eating only Cheetos, Pop Tarts, Gatorade, and Velveeta ensures the sharky only takes one bite, and tells all his buddies not to gnaw the disgusting humans.

They get injured seals and sealions at the mammal center in Sausalito (SF bay area) all the time with bites taken out of 'em. People also kiteboard nearby at Dylan, Stinson Beach, Ocean Beach, and Waddell and I haven't heard of a kiteboarder being bitten yet. Besides the surfers are out there taking one for the team by distracting the sharks. Sounds like Tony just wants the beach to himself Wink

ppssssss - Cool

yeah man....I don't want everyone to find out about the sick waves and killer wind that blows at the coast....or about the amazing endless miles of downwinders and awesome sessions that everyone can have, all within a couple of hours drive....

Anyways - I just thought the pictures were interesting since I haven't seen pics of seals with wounds off the Or. Coast in a while... Wink

My understanding is there's a handful of people around the world every year that get attacked, mostly surfers - how many kiters have actually been chopped by a shark? I know you see them, but there's just plenty of stuff to eat around.
