You know - you jump, and then feel another tug upward as you almost hit apex. Any theories on the cause of this elusive phenomena. Any techniques to make it happen consitantly? Gusts, sheeting, flying - ???

definately a gust coming through, i think. Some of the biggest air i've ever gotten was due to this phenomena.

consistantly making it happen? never, your best bet is to fly in the Gorge when mad gusts come through all the time Wink

I got in a triple last Saturday at the sandbar... the wind would go from near 0 to really high for a second. I hit a jump right about the time a gust came through. It hit me 2 more times. Didn't really take me way higher on each one, but I was floating for 3-5 seconds... really cool feeling. I cut the power a little on the last one by sheeting out, and let myself back down.

Actually by using the swell as your initial ramp/boost you can make it happen pretty consistantly.

For consistent double lofting, I ride on 1 or 2 kite sizes too big for me in gusty conditions. This way, I can quickly park my kite at the apex during my jump and wait for that 2nd boost. I've had 3 sessions this summer when I could actually count on this 2nd boost with almost every jump! It felt to me like my kite was hitting a 2nd layer of wind about 100+ feet up from the water's surface. My best sessions for this have been at Viento and HR.

fyi

Kiting up wind of kodack point at the hatch is a known double jumpe zone. Smile

john

ps or least I seem to experience them frequently at that location....

I believe I've felt this phenomenon a few times but not in the Gorge, in FL.

Once was gust driven on my 9.4m blacktip in 2000 during a squall in Miami and a gust hit on top of a gust that sent me even higher , from 15 to 40.

Another was on a 7m BT two years later similar conditions in ft Desoto.

BUT, the oddest time this EVER happened to me was June of '06 when I was kiting in the east side of tampa bay. Anyways, on a 23.5m Contra ( ! ) with a directional board in onshore west winds steady 14-15kts about 2000 yards out from where I launched and Jumped maybe an 8 footer when , Wow, a thermal or hot pocket of air came at me ( I could actually feel a hot blast of air! ) and I started to rise by another 30 feet! I thought thats enough big boy, and pretty much sheeted out for a smooth landing.

So watch out for gusts but I think Hot air bubbles can also take you for a ride in some places!

-- or you can just rig big as someone said, LOL!--

XXX - Awesome!

If gusts are the primary cause, then you would not expect the double up at the coast. But - if launching off a wave causes the double jump, then it should be easy to double jump when launching off waves at the coast. Any experiences at the coast?

Also like Railgrab said, another layer of wind - I have read that the wind is stronger higher off the water - I can not confirm this, but it makes sense. The rough surface of the water would cause friction, and slow the air at the surface, right?

I think part of it is having your kite as close to above you as possible helps too... if you over send and have the kite way off to one side you won't get the double boost effect.

it's a gust or a thermal in the case of Florida.
Florida has some of the best thermal soaring in the U.S..
Many flights to 15K ,so those bumps could take you a lot higher if you were looping your kite and centered in the thermal

the air layer above 100' is very stable
compared to air in "ground effect"
