Wed Aug 22, 07 10:38 am Best Waves on WA & OR Coast? (w/ 9 to 12-m kites) |
|
|
Hey all,
Just got access to NWkite. Been kiting for 4-years down in the Ventura, CA area. Up in NW for a couple of weeks. Looking to hit the waves and camp at a place with good wind and waves. Solid kiting skills - jumps, waves, & strapless. Have this Friday through Monday off and willing to drive as far as Floras Lake (430-miles from Bremerton), but hoping to get wind closer.
Have 7, 9, & 12-m kites (Caution Answer quiver) and looking to rent a surfboard near the windy breaks (short or longboard, straps or strapless).
Any suggestions...?
Also, picked up a skimboard to try out in the surf with the kites. Should be good for some laughs if anybody's around.
Thanks for the help. _________________ Lifetime experience junkie - with an itch I can't scratch... |

Looks like Thurs-Fri might work along the whole coast. Not sure about after that. The best typical spots are: North Coast (Fort Stevens to Sunset beach area) or Manzanita, Central coast Newport or Florence, or South Coast in the Floras Lake area.
If you don't want to drive far and want lots of wind (mid twenties to thirties) then Manzanita's your best bet (just don't ride too far North by the bluff). The Fort Stevens area has great downwinders, but is typically lighter, blowing in the upper teens on a decent day. Otherwise head to Central or South coast for more wind. |

| The Hood to Coast relay race is going to end at Seaside this Saturday. Somewhere around 80,000 or so people are going to be there. If you don't like crowds then you'll probably want to avoid this place this time around. |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I definitely want to avoid the crowds and light wind, so it looks like I'll be heading south.
I take it that the further south you go the less onshore the wind? How's Manzanita stack up to places like Pismo Beach down in California? It's very onshore there. Can't stand that place.
Me likey sideshore wind - es muy bueno!
So the parking near the Pistol River bridge seems to be about 400-feet south on the seaward side of 101 according to good ol' Google Earth. That seem about right?
Thanks again, mi amigos. _________________ Lifetime experience junkie - with an itch I can't scratch... |

You shouldn't have to head that far south to get good wind... Manzo, Lincoln City, Beverly Beach, Newport, shit even Florence are all much closer and good winds are forecast through the weekend with good swell - enjoy!!
If you have to get nuclear and sideshore winds, the best bet is FLORENCE. Buck up! Definitely not like Pismo. |

good info...I want to head down in Sept for a coast trip. Any suggestions on which area is the best for surfing and kiting? I would like to do a bit of both.
Also, I am going to bring my wife...she doesn't do either sport so I would like to be able to offer up a "quaint town" for her to wander around etc.
I am laughing at this note...I am not asking for much am I!!?? Surf, kite, quaint town....maybe it is all a pipe dream.
Anyway...suggestions would be great.
Thanks

It's not a pipe dream. . .
As much as I love Seaside and Gearheart, I would not catagorize them in the "quaint town" catagory. I would hit Mazanita for your quaint little Hamlet town experience. . . Manzo is like a much smaller Cannon Beach. The town has about 4,500 residents and a great mix of shops and services. . . Manzo has sun and wind most of the time when the wind is forecasted. The direction and surge from the waves and current make it hard to get more than a couple of turns on a wave face. If it is not windy, Oswald State Park is just 4 miles North. . . Short Sands beach is a very popular place to surf and camp--it's a half moon bay that is wind sheltered--and Cannon beach is about another 10 miles north of that ie Ecola State Park/Indian Beach for surf. Not sure how the surfing is at Manzo when it is not windy, which not very often.
