| keep in mind the current, makes it easy to go one way, nearly impossible to go the other when the wind is lighter cause you travel with the current and the apparent winds drops to near zero. I'm guessing staying close to the jetti (south jetti on south beach when wind, and therefore current, is from the north) would keep you out of the strong current. Also, you might want to check out agate beach, It's the beach between devil's punchbowl and the lighthouse but you gota watch out for the surfers at otter rock (north end of the beach). Not sure about Nai beach, haven't kited there... yet. |

Wind never blows, the current sweeps you down the coast, the surfers will slash your tires, and the meth heads will break into your car.
Just kidding - come on down and check it out for yourself! |

Bigger sharks than the land sharks we got down here in So-Cal?
I'm heading to Newport tomorrow for the weekend. The locals can't be any worse than the ones we've got at Silverstrand near Oxnard, but most of ours get out of the water when the wind hits 15 or above. Your surfers probably stay out in Victory-at-Sea conditions or they don't get any waves. _________________ Lifetime experience junkie - with an itch I can't scratch... |

lol... the locals are cool in newport.... have a great time!
N wind = South Jetty, S wind = North Jetty
look for the really big bridge going over the bay, then head towards the ocean on the correct side of the bridge. |

Got back to NW Washington late last night. Yup, Newport is where it's at. Had a chance to surf up at Otter Creek on Saturday, kite at Bandon (Whiskey Run) on Sunday, and kite at Newport South Jetty on Monday. Good stuff.
I was essentially out alone on my 9-m Caution Answer from 1:30 - 3:30 on Monday and had a great time. A wee-bit lully for me with sensor showing 16-18, but I was on an Ossie's rental 8'-3" longboard so mostly got back upwind after each waveride and had a blast. I heard it got better late in the day. Man, the waves are really fun in your area!
Can't wait to tell all my bros back down in Ventura to buy up all the good real estate in Nye...
Kiddin', 'course. Thanks to MOcean for all the good info while planning my trip, and to Mike (Blue Toyota T100) and Matt (Nelscott Tow-In Surfer) for chattin' about the waves. Maybe one day I'll get back up your way.
Until then, keep shreddin' those lips!
Ciao. _________________ Lifetime experience junkie - with an itch I can't scratch... |

and at the risk of resurrecting a previous out-of-control thread....
when you get to the surf, the guy on the wave upwind of you has the right of way.
all you starboard-tack "I'm going out!" flatwater riders take note. if you are going out and somebody is blasting down the line on a wave, get the hell out of the way (i.e.- turn around and go back in for a second).
seen a lot of kiters on the coast in the last week with not one clue about how to manage waves. the point of kiting in the surf is to SURF. going straight out, then straight back in *is not* what you are trying to do. you have entered the surf zone, and surf rules are what matters.
make a real bottom turn, zip along the breaking wave, hit the lip. hit the lip again. and again. and again. and again. grin to yourself as you begin to understand. if you are goofyfoot, time to learn to ride switch.
have fun, and surf hard.

JSJ...
so true.
Right on.
Clear the line and get out of the way so the guy surfing it can get down the line. |

i say mixed reveiws on newport locals from quite a bit of surf experience there (on and off for 10+ years) there; occasional snakes, some grouches who will cuss you, a very screwed up 'lineup' if you can call it that. but also some very nice folks and some sick glassed-off days. can be downright crowded too. the rip along the rocks will take you out to the lineup on a surfboard if you want but can also be pretty powerful especially when your shoulders are feeling tired.
what's it like kiting w/ the cliff right there? how far south do you have to go from the prime break(if at all) - it just seems so close that the wind would get blocked from the north... it's a very short wave, after all. peace |

Just pay some respect to the local surfers. You'd be grouchy too, if you've seen the surf crowd explode like it is now, what with the surfshop at Agate renting boards to kooks, surf schools, a huge influx of OSU students, and younger guys who won't even give you the time of day. That's why kiting's so bitchin - we all get along and help out - much more resource to go around than one or two confined surf breaks. |

it's true, i'd fer sher be grouchy and was not pointing the finger. hope it didn't seem that way, b/c i only point the finger at blowhard - see you out this week! kidding cuz we made the peace and i like watching him ride/kickin it with him a little. i was just saying 'heads up, here's my take from experience'. calling people out is fine, but i've been yelled at out there when it was out of line imo. and i've been snaked, stinkeyed, etc, when i give people room along the break. sometimes you can't win. it goes back at least a dozen years that i've been out there
the bitch of living in oregon is that it has been exploding with an influx of people who, again imo, are coming to consume oregon and not living inline with the values and the land that has made it such a killer place traditionally. if people come to contribute and make it a better place, i welcome them. this place is changing drastically and it's up to everyone who knows and loves it to work to save as much as possible. just look at how trashed our fucking highways are.... i am grouchy about this shit |
