I'm a kiteboarder from So Cal (from Maine, originally), and I'm excited to be moving to Portland soon.
(I'm dropping out of grad school to start an environmental company with some friends!)
I rock climb, too, and noticed that although wiki's have been really useful for that community to share info about local crags, there isn't really one for kiteboarders.
Forums like this one are really, really useful. But a wiki where you can create new pages, edit existing pages, and upload images is also a good tool.
So, I recently make a wiki for kiteboarders.
I'm not sure if it will be useful or catch on, but I thought I'd let nwkite users know about it, in case anyone was inspired to log in and post some content.
It's called www.accesskiteboarding.com It's free obviously, and users can just log in and start creating content.
I thought it would be cool to make a wiki where kiting locations is the focus. You can post your local spot, describe it, put on some aerial photos (just like the 'Spots' pages on this site). Except everyone has a hand in creating it, and can change it in real time to reflect up-to-date info.
I was hoping that this might be a way to resolve or come to a consensus about access issues and rules.
Like; where to launch, where to learn, where to jump, blackout dates, etc....
So, locals could create the rules, and others might follow them when they arrive...
Maybe that's wishful thinking though! If people are interested in using the site, I'll be happy to change it anyway they see fit (if I can!).
Anyway. If anyone has any comments, questions, ideas, criticisms, let me know.
Does anyone here think that a wiki would be a useful website for kiters?
I put an email address in my profile, too.

As a noob i think it would be great. I know there are several sites that have info but come one, the gorge is destination and should have a more central location for the info. I'd be happy to help set this up. I'm a web designer by day (and night) so i know what to do but i don't know what everyone would want and benefit from.

We do have some informative and evolving user contributed guides (see links at top of page.) I have setup and torn down wiki's before, just never was really too interested in moderating one.

I guess I am not interested in a comprehensive spot guide either for selfish reasons (crowded beaches, ugh.) Also if I am partially responsible for exposing secret spots to the masses I don't want to answer to the guys on the beach... sorry. Confused

One thing we are missing is a newbie guide. Been meaning to put this together for some time. Too busy kiting lately, maybe I can whack it out this weekend.
