What beach was this picture taken at? Also, I'm curious why coast kiters use directional, sometimes strapless boards. Great Shot, that's the kind ofo kiting I want to do this summer...

From what I understand a board with soft, round rails will carry more speed in turns due to more surface area touching the water. This allows you to carry your speed through your turns on the wave.

Also, I don't think there is a more refined tool for wave riding than the surfboard and it's shape.

Surfboards do a few things better than a twintip, the main thing is the feel, smooth and glidey. The biggie is better glide without power from the kite, so you can ride a wave or plane thru turns longer without needing to powerup the kite as soon. Another thing is they are better at turning hard and sharp without skipping out, twintips break free unless you are perfectly balanced in smooth water, surfboards let you get away with more. You can go amazingly fast on a surfboard with a solid feeling of control.

Straps are a preference thing. Going strapless takes more skill and since there aren't straps in the way switching your stance is easy. I guess some think it's more "pure" or "soul" surfing. I like straps, they give me better control of the board and you're less likely to loose your board on a breaking wave and have it wash into the beach

You can use a twintip in waves just fine but they don't feel the same and are not as forgiving

I believe that's the local best sales guy at Pismo Beach, CA. I think I saw that picture on his blog.
