I was wondering if anyone has ever tried using water skis instead of a board? If so, what were the results? |

I did not witness this event, but supposedly the last time CGWA let kiteboarders in the annual blowout, Cory Roeseler with a kite and on waterskiis beat the blowout king Bruce Peterson for a $10K purse |

I was in the 86 Blowout when he came ripping by me and other "wallowers" in the Home Valley - Wind Mountain stretch. He was on waterskis and a framed kite of his own design, and he sure could make it through the lulls that left the windsurfers struggling. I don't think he qualified to take the prize however, as kiters didn't count as legitimate race contestants. A lot of people stopped laughing at the "kite guy" after that though! |

I myself have tried to use water skis (short trick skis) and it is definatly harder. but do-able. Being a snow kiter i thought it might transfer nicely to water but... you have to get the fins to be very close to the center of the foot. one fin on the back is not enough to cut up wind. it is like trying to ice skate with 30mph winds. but the skates jsut dont seem to stick to the water as desired.
so the skis that i rode had four fins per ski and were very close to the boot. To me it seemed much harder to stay up wind and land tricks. but if what they said is true. i am not the only unfortuanate soul that has tried this style.
ultimately i did not like it and have stuck to my board. to each there own i guess... |

During the next Blowout that includes kites, you will have to definitely check out the set up that Corey (Roeseler) uses.
The last time I saw him compete (during the Blowout in 00'?), he and Jim Bison were on Jump Waterskis (something like 200cm long) and oversheeting their kites by wrapping the outside lines around the bar so that they could run dead downwind with the kite whipping back and forth in a figure-8 pattern.
Both guys were going so fast over the swell that they were catching air and clearing 2-3 sets of waves at a time.
Clearly only for the committed kiter. Something amazing to witness and hard to believe until you actually see it in person.
As for the fastest Blowout time, I think that it is a toss up between Corey and Dale Cook. Dale might actually hold the record run time, which I'm sure Corey is ready to take down at the next opportunity.
BTW - Wasn't someone working on another blowout that would include kiters?

Shay from CGKA is working on organizing a blowout towards the end of the summer. We are going to invite the windsurfers and possibly Laser sailboats. Then of course we will have the killer party afterwards |
