Sat Jun 16, 07 10:57 am North Coast Timing? |
|
|
I have been Jonesen to get out to the Coast and the forcast for Monday looks good. Quote: | Monday:
Ridging starts to develop on Monday. Gorge gradients look westerly but weak. Swell to the Event Site should build to 18-22 but sites farther east should be lighter. Jones Beach west 16-20 late. Sauvies NW 13-17. North Coast NW 15-19 with 21-25 at Manzanita. NW wind at central sites in the 18-22 range. South Coast sites NW 21-25. NW swell 6 feet.
|
My question is, What time of the day does it typically start blowing on an NW flow? Is it a function of the cloud/fog line?
I want to hit Sunset beach and do a down winder if any body is interested let me know
If Sunset beach it's going off and Manzanita is, where is the best place to kite at Manzanita?
Thank for your info/advice in advance.

Sup 2-FIN - I don't have a ton of experience on the coast, but it seems like the north coast starts to get good in the afternoons when the fog starts to burn off. We should be getting some good wind out there if these storm systems let up some. The next week-end it looks good, I'm heading out. Maybe we can get a group together to shuttle the sunset strip. - Chris
P.S. If you hit Manzo - launch quite a ways downwind of the monster cliffs to the north for the smoothest wind - (ask Kraemer about that one )

We live in Astoria. This is our fifth season riding Sunset on a frequest basis. I am no weatherman but I can try and give you our take on the wind here.
This time of year it can build early because a lot of the wind is weather related, and a small percentage is thermal.
We use Iwindsurf and other forcasting tools. But honestly I find the simplest and best info at
www.accuweather.com
You can do an HOURLY forecast and it is generally pretty good at predicting weather related winds.
If accuweather or Iwindsurf predicts a weather based NW wind of 10 we will assume it is going to blow NW 15 to 18. (added the thermal effect)
Yesterday we went out at 1 and rode until 5 ...but by mid July the typical wind won't begin until late in the day being that a majority of the wind is thermal in mid to late summer. High pressure is your friend for riding in the surf. Wind in the warmer summer months starts about 2 or 3.
Swell is another factor you need to consider. And if the tide is coming in or out. This will determine current factors. Incoming tide with a WNW wind will mean current going with the wind. Going bigger on the kite size usually takes care of it. Better to be overpowered than under when surfing the waves downwind.
Basically.....if you are on Sunset strip by noon you will be fine. But don't show up any later than 5 ...for the most part. But we have ridden until 9 a lot.
Manzanita is a different deal as it starts blowing early due to the venturi effect of wind coming around the mountain.
Be there by 11...the fog breaks and it's on.
The added thermals in late afternoon change the game---- so that the winds are really gusty after 3.

Look for High Pressure Building.
Thermal trough will develop in N Cal, and then work up the Willamete Valley, then shift east. This is the typical pattern.
If it is warm at the coast, it will be going off shore soon
The south coast is almost always happening, unless the thermal trough starts its move north, then move north with it.
For waves, Incoming tide will have better waves and outgoing will jack up the faces with higher close out potential.
Manzo has consistently followed the south coast forecasts.
If you got time go

Thanks. Second shot is one of my favorites.
I like the anticipation in it.
