I love dogs, which is why I don't bring mine to the spit, to run around in a pack pooping, chasing each other through lines, kites, people etc.
Please, leave your dog off of the spit. |

My opinion is dogs should be allowed to run around free there. There are nastier things in the water than a little bit of dog poo in some sand. Most of the dogs I've come across were well behaved even if they chased me a little.
Maybe a compromise of a 20' leash tethered to an anchor when you're not actively monitoring your dog would be the best way to handle this? |

What I found offensive in this article was the fact that he said that windsurfers were smarter than kiteboarders. That is a pretty strong blanket statment. |

Called the port of hood river. There is a leash law during the day. Early am and dusk dogs can run free otherwise they must be leashed. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

Labeling all dogs as bad is the same as saying all kiters are dangerous and all windsurfers are pikers.
Some dogs are well behaved and are legit on the beach, and some bark the whole time and run over kites.
I let my dog lurk when I'm kiting @ the sandbar, but @ Stevenson she is tied up once I'm on the water. |

Being a newby, I may not be the best one to address this, but having loose dogs on the spit is like having uneducated kiters on the water. It will ruin it for all of us. Lets take the high road and educate our selves and others before something bad happens. _________________ MS |

Did they say exactly where on their property this leash law applies? Did they say that the law applies to the sandbar? If so, just the part of the sandbar that belongs to the port, or the part that belongs to the State of Oregon?
I like dogs, and dogs love the sandbar, and I like to see happy dogs...but, last year, a big brown dog swam across my lines as I was relaunching in the shallow water...and, got one of my lines caught in the "S" shaped hook that attaches the dog tag to the dog collar. I fought to keep the kite on the water, to avoid a hot launch with a dog hooked to my rear line, and I tried to get up to the dog, to free him, but he panicked and tried to get away from me. I didn't know whether or not I would get bitten, but I took the chance and finally got a hold of his collar, as he raked me with his nails. I got the line loose, and luckily the wind lulled, and the kite did not hot launch. That incident was about the most exciting thing that happened to me while kiting last summer. I hope that never happens again, but with the present topography of the sandbar, there will be lots of pools, for dogs to swim and run across the kiter's downed kite lines.
Here's an idea...maybe an enterprising person can set up a "dog Daycare Center" at the Spit. |

I dont think the issue is "good" or "bad" dog rather than watching your dog when its on the beach. If you go kite leash the dog, if your there let the dog run but keep a eye on it. It's not fair for the rest of us to have to deal with your dogs while your kiting. |

The Port says "the sandbar" To get more technical than that probably requires an attorney. They say tickets will be issued to "unleashed dogs".
Speaking of attorneys.... I'm sure they will get envolved when a dog bites someone or causes a "hot" launch.
Best to keep you dogs under control and not put yourself in a position of risk.
Ps I think we are smarter and more evolved than windsurfers _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...

I think Bettyboarder said it well.... if you are around to watch your dog (and you do) then no leash is fine with me... but if you go out for a sesh, then leash the pup up on the inside of the bar away from the action.
Again I think its as much for the dogs well being as the kiters... |

If we look at this from a cost-benefit analysis what would happen?
What is the cost of having loose dogs? Well, its been mentioned they get tangled in lines, they nip at your heels, they could cause a hot launch and so forth. How often do people have problems with dogs? I have never had a problem with any dog. But if this happens a lot (and I'm just lucky it hasn't happened to me) then its a big cost. If it only happens a couple of times a season then the cost is small.
What is the benefit? Well, if you watch the dogs they look like they are having more fun at the spit than the humans. I actually really enjoy watching them play and splash. Its very healthy for them to get out and play, run around, and stretch their legs, socialize with other dogs. Also, I just enjoy being around dogs (I know others on this forum may hate dogs , so I am just expressing my personal opinion). So the benefit is significant - very happy dogs.
I believe the benefits outweigh the costs - this is my opinion based on the fact that I love dogs and love watching them have fun and based on my experience they don't cause that much of a problem. |

I live in a semi-rural area outside
of HR and my old dog Katie does
roam around a little. We take walks
down the road everyday with our
2 dogs so everyone knows our dogs.
Sad then that somebody nearby
decided to shoot her. Luckily
the round went in and bounced
off her clavicle and went back
out. $500 at the vet but I think
she'll live. |

She's a tough old girl. Sorry to post bad news.
It's actually the 2nd time we believe she has
been attacked. About 6 months ago she came
home with a 6 inch long gash in her back. 10
stitches on that one and the hair still has not
grown back. We thought at the time that she
might have got hung up on something. But
now we think that might have been a shovel
or knife cut. |
