Really fun day but my butt is still hurtin from those spit jumps! I should try to do em more like Henry and Trevor and actually clear the spit instead of landing right in the middle of it.

I know one dude who likely logged an insane & ab-devastating # of hours over 3 days on a trip down from Spokane. I'd like to hear an estimate from Donny Baker on the number of kiting hours this weekend. Feel a bit sore today?!

Felt like windsports bliss at The Spit to me. My 11 year old and his buddy were windsurfing, I was kiting, my 8 year old was a trainer kite jockey and "body surfing" madman--all at the same spot at the same time! I think it's working out for everyone who has a little common sense and respect for their fellow recreationalists.

Thanks! They don't photo well though, I'll have to start doing a grab or get higher or something. Need some new stuff... Maybe my shoulder is good enough to start trying those passes your doing (but probably not.) Next time you see a white/gold ski out there come over and we can take your wife up to Wells for a downwinder.
It was an awesome weekend, hope I didn't cut anybody off or anything. It gets tight sometimes in the pool but everyone seems to manage.
There was one guy teaching his 60 pound kid to learn in the kiddie pool right upwind of the rocks and wood piles. You can see him in that last pic of Henry in the background. He got lofted a couple times and was really powered on his 5m. I told his dad that it probably wasn't the best place to learn. Hope I didn't come off as a territorial dick or anything... I really did think that the kid could get in trouble if the wind came up more (which it did after they took down.)
One comment he said that stuck with me was "there's nowhere safe to learn in the Gorge." ... I don't think that's true at all. The safest place to learn in the Gorge is in the open water with jetski/boat support. Almost all accidents happen on beaches with people running into hard objects. In the open water you can go downwind forever with nothing but soft water to run into.
I'm stoked the kid was getting some rides in, he's probably going to show us all up someday. But it'd be good for him to learn some deep water skills and stay away from areas with rocks and logs directly downwind. Kiting is really about surviving in the deep water, not the shallows. Learning to self rescue and body drag upwind are essential skills and you can't learn them in 4 inches of water.
Also taking lessons with a professional instructor is always a good (read: necessary) move. May cost a few $$$ but its worth it.
Anyway it was a great weekend, cheers to all.

You still digging that kite? It looks like it! You definitely should take the fins off your board and do some surface handle passes. They're super easy and if you go down wind at the kite, there is no pull and your shoulders will be just fine. Try it on a skim board, that's the easiest. Just remember to let go if it goes wrong.
It seemed like we were all doing our tricks on our port tack, so I would just wait at the far south side of the pool for an opportunity to head out and do something. It worked out great cause it gives me a chance to take a break before trying something stupid.
Down wind of the death pile that was the scene of the injury a couple weekends ago is a great place to teach actually. The sandbar hooks out so that if you go to far down wind you run into shallow water. That is the place to teach. It's deep water with nothing but water down wind. Lyle is also a killer place to teach.
Katie is doing good and actually riding upwind when she's powered. She's taken several lessons from qualified instructors, but just hasn't spent much time on her own, so that's what we were doing. Unfortunately until I get my act together, demo something I like, and buy a new kite, all we have is that 7m. She wasn't powered enough down where we were to get a solid upwind tack in either direction. Plus the swirling current doesn't help.

Cheers Forrest... btw, didn't mean the rant on learning to be taken by you... but the jetski offer still stands if you think your wife would have fun doing a downwinder.
Also I owe you a ride on the new 9m, just grab me when I am out there. I do like the kite a lot but it probably has the same low end as your 7m so you need plenty of wind.

I know, I didn't take it that way. We'll take you up on that offer sometime, but we're trying to figure out a sustainable way to get up there. I might just have to wait till we have two setups and can ride together, then I can take her into the channel for some swell and current to get up there.
We were also talking about just having her swim from the Hook to Wells cause she's a good swimmer. I would launch at the Sandbar and just upwind to the Island to meet her. It's really good up there and I bet she'd progress so quickly.

Nice... think that is first time we got the three girls in one pic (all kiting that is)... good eye Jim.
Y'all left here just in time. I decided to stay here in HR and "work" today... one kite out cruising at the event site around 7:30 - 8:00 this morning... but it is pouring rain and thundering now. So, I guess I actually will do some real work...

Yeah he cleared it at about 3" above the sandbar He had another one that he bonked the top of a kite.
Phil, I think the kiteloop shots came out pretty well, you actually had some decent height on that one after the loop yanked you through. I can post the rest of the sequence later tonight.
My favorite picture is the high-5 one with Henry and Janet. He managed to get Nicole and Janet on the same tack
