I think I'm back in action - this will be season opener for me, after a rough winter of two surgeries and 6 weeks of radiation treatments. Just hope the swell has some some mercy and I hope I don't get too pounded!

was out there sunday afternoon. mostly surviving, trying to get my sea legs back. got a couple turns in.

overall seemed like decent enough conditions. a bit big and confused but a few nice ones. windy enough for the 5. kinda surprised no-one else was around.... not even the "host of the jetty"

How big would you say it was in florence - newport had some mast high sets - gets the heart going - what size/kind board were you on?

i'm not so good at judging wave heights, but mast high for the sets sounds right. the kind where you think you're all the way out and then some monster starts breaking and you tuck tail.

in between sets very easy to get out, so a nice combination.

i was on a blowhard custom board - it's not a small board but not a glide either. little bit bigger board seems to help with survival kiting, gives you a little more float in the lulls.

we rarely see windsurfers when it's like that, i think the newport jetty affords a little more protection. still, gotta respect poleboarders charging any ocean beach this weekend.

Very humbling - think I kited for two hours and never dropped the board - didn't get my head wet. Spent a lot of time on the far outside trying to get back upwind - the 122 SX wasn't cutting it - sail way past the end of the jetty and then head back in and end up in the extact same spot at the same crab pot. Jump on a wave and you would be a mile down the beach in 2 minutes. May have to bust out the 157 oldschool slingy surf twintip the next time out - will be a while before I'm hitting it unstrapped Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

pete after getting it good sat all day on the 5m with some invert threats in front of sizeable waves , I was glad to drive away sunday with my tail between my legs and watch you rule it . I have some pics of you about a 1.5 miles out (solo)and the waves were huge at times 15 foot faces easy. Good job pete. looked like you were plenty lit on the 5 and my wind meter hit 37 and I only had her up for a few seconds.

Gabe I am no pro but I can't ride anything smaller than 140 in the salt w/o fightin' to stay up wind constantly... at least till the waves back off.

And its now documented that there is no parking on the beach and dogs must be on leashes at all times. Not cheap fines I am told Laughing Laughing Laughing .

FYI, they started giving tickets in PC now too... don't drive North by where the dorys go, stay to the south, in front of the pelican.... i watched the cops chase off a few and ticket a few more...

thanks for the props regi. Cool

gman, i've done ok with as small as a 130, can't imagine going smaller then that. this is rigging a little large on an SLE kite, i think C kites are a lot harder in those type of conditions. biggish board + smallish SLE seems to be the ideal.

140 -150 seems like what most guys are using in big surf. seems like longish but not super wide is what you want, but the industry is moving towards things like the glide - so you see older boards and customs. i don't think "i want to stay upwind in big waves" is a big target market, most kiters are either riding in flat/chop/river-swell or doing downwinders.

also, staying closer to the jetty helps with the upwind thing, it will even rip upwind in some places. more downwind you go you get into downwind current.

so are we talking parking tickets or dog tickets (or both)? wonder who they ticket if the dog is on the beach and the rider is in the drink. that will be too bad if it shuts the dog scene down, that's half the fun for me.

That makes sense - was surprised that as you sailed through the impact zone the wind would sometimes drop out - the waves would glass up nice but it seemed like the waves were blanketing the wind - the wind would kick back on the inside but in the critical section it was sketch

I know I disappointed you guys for not showing up at the jetty, but instead rode for a long time at Siletz Bay, getting the muscles back in shape and dialing it in after being out since September. The swell size made the decision for me, although I heard the zone along the jetty was containable. I'll be ready for next time now.

I'd hate to think about how Florence was.
