last weekend I finally tried (and landed) the lazy kiter backroll....where you kind of just spin around, and don't really go upside down ... i'm wondering what I need to change to make it a true invert? i.e. what do I need to do differently on the takeoff to get the board up and my head down? |

I am in a similar boat here....
I can do those rolls hooked-in no problem, I am just working on my height.....but, I used to accidentally loop the kite during the roll, b/c I was throwing more of a wakeboard influenced roll I think, with my arms out like I was unhooked, but not.
So, I have been trying them unhooked and you actually extend way more and invert...
I think while doing the hooked in backrol, you are rotating around the chicken loop...and don't really "invert"......but when unhooked, you are extending more...
Not completely sure though....maybe some others will chime-in
Although, I have seen some guys sign the kite a bit when doing a backroll hooked-in , and they can make it look a little steezier....cuz the height off thewater.. _________________ Shallow Dive Design, 2nd Wind Sports, Airush, Trident Sports |

yeap, that pretty much sums it up, when you're hooked into the chicken loop, all your rotations revolve around it. It is much easier to throw 360's and 720's unhooked if you ask me, because you're not rotating around the bar, the bar is rotating with you while unhooked.
Altho, if you're really inverted on a back roll, you kind of just spin on axis at the chicken loop.
and to note, when pulling an unhooked S-bend, it is a good idea to pull the bar into your center, similiar to if you are hooked in, but at the same time you're not hooked in giving you much more freedom. I personally have problems doing s-bends and/or front rolls hooked in, they always just turn into a forward 360. |

without seeing you do it its hard to say what you need to do to get inverted. the best advice i can give you is that your body will follow your head so if you throw your head more downward your feet will go upward. it doesnt help on the landing though so using some larger swell to get extra height is a good idea. |

less kite - more 'pop' - ie. have the kite @ 45 or lower and 'pop' the board - c |

kite low and unhooked, goes a long way towards more legit backrolls (not sure mine are really legit yet.) |
