Does anyone know about kiting in Pacifica, CA? Or possibly half moon bay. I have a friend who lives there and would like to visit where there is wind.

you *might* kite down at Sharp Park south of the pier, but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Ocean Beach (SF) is 20 min north and is wide open. There is a fair population of people kiting there, but it's usually dead onshore. Plenty of room to blast back and forth on the inside. Park at the south windmill to check it out. Beware of sideshore AND outgoing rips. Most of northern CA's rivers drain out thru the bay, and as a result an amazing amount of water moves up and down the beach with every tide change.

Half Moon Bay is a pretty good option. The beach bends around to get a good side-on in the spring but downwind, the shore faces right into the wind/chop. Locals are usually friendly, unless you happen to run into whitey, who will literally bite your head off.... try not to drop your kite. Park for free at the condos just north of Sunset State beach.

more detailed spot info: bayareakiteboarding.com (faaaaaaar better than what you'll find on ikite).

Have fun.

John

It is about an hour south of SF, but is well worth the drive. Gorgeous wide open sandy beach with good swell and solid wind. Ocean Beach is pretty darn good in the winter and Crissy Field is also very consistent.

Not sure about Pacifica, but people ride Ocean Beach, HMB, and Waddell fairly often. There's also 3rd Ave on the inside of the bay by the San Mateo bridge for flat water/chop riding, and of course Sherman Island in the Sacramento River delta for the real good flat water/chop riding on the river.

People ride at Roosevelt beach in Half Moon Bay. Go north on 1 from 92. Turn left after about a mile at the brown state beach sign.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=half+moon+bay&sll=37.48141,-122.239745&sspn=0.007347,0.009838&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=37.48928,-122.454579&spn=0.007347,0.009838&om=1

Waddell is only another half hour South of HMB and is much better known for its waves. However, keep in mind that it can get pretty crowded (especially on weekends) so you should be pretty comfortable riding waves and courteous to the other riders. The beach is big so you can usually work your way upwind or downwind if it's too crowded, but the waves aren't quite as good there.

Also, another option for a day when Waddell is blowing might be Gazos, which is about 5 miles North of Waddell (there's a gas station and restaurant across from it, which is rare in these parts). It's also a nice long sandy beach and I almost never see people riding there, but have ridden there once myself and know other people do too sometimes. I rode there on a somewhat weird wind day, but it seems fairly similar to Waddell in terms of setup. Maybe the waves don't set up quite as nicely, but I've seen a surfer there so they can't be that bad. I was there in Feb. in 1.5 OH+ waves and they seemed fairly decent at the time, but don't know how that compares to the normal swell they get there.

You can find more at bayareakiteboarding.com as someone already mentioned. I might hit HMB today since it's blowing like stink around here Smile

thanks everyone for their feedback! Greatly appreciated. I'll post back after my visit and let you know what the wind was like.
