Anyone have experience with "golf style" kite travel bags?
I have an Ocean Rodeo Mako King board (165cm x 45cm) that I'd like to bring on a trip.

Looking at this 190cm bag from Dakine:

thanks,
Bob

My ( limited ) experience with Alaska and American is :

Do as Pepe says and go to the airline's website, print off their
limitations and don't expect to "sneak" anything over on them.

The above two airlines charge $25 each way assuming it is under 50 lbs
and less than 6 feet in length I believe......
- FYI - they don't seem to stick religiously to " total dimensional inches" in
my experience......

We just flew alaksa down to Los barrilles and they didn't charge me for my surfboard bag. It came in at just under 50lbs and I had my litewave dv8 and my ocean rodeo mako 150 in there along with my wetsuits bars and a kite. They seem to be pretty nice most of the time as long as you are nice to them. She said I may get charged 25$ on the way home but oh well. Hope you have a good trip!

Cheers!

In my experience, they will always weigh your bag so keep it under 50lbs to avoid overweight charges.

I can't recall them ever pulling out a tape to measure my bags, but it is still a good idea to keep them as compact as possible to avoid the oversize charges.

For a 165cm board, I would look for a (snowboard?) bag that is closer to 165cm rather that the 190cm bag.

Hey - I was just in LV with this bad boy :

http://www.mysticboarding.com/products/bags-accessories/boardbags-441/elevate/

Specs say 160 cm long but my 165 cm (5'4") Slingshot Angry swallow fit into it handily (even with pipe insulation taped around edges for protection) as well as 8,10,12 Rallys in compression bags plus wetsuit etc. Bought it @ Windance.

Kept it at 49.5 lbs and was fine on Alaska; no one measures the height (+15cm over the 'limit').

Btw, got hassled @ Cabo airport re: "you have more than two kites, you have to pay import duty". I know Spanish well enough to tell them that I need 3 sizes the same way golfers need more than 2 clubs and this worked.

Hey Navi, good to hear the Mystic bag worked out for you.

Bob, this is the same bag I suggest you consider or the Mystic 5'10" Wave Pro.

I have a 190 Club Wagon and it is HUGE. Fits my 5'8" Tyrant without a hitch, and it'd easily store multiple boards kites bars and wetsuits, but keeping it under 50 is tough.

Anyway, lemme know if you wanna buy a barely used one. I'd let it go for $110 and even pay shipping if you want. I think I'm gonna get a slightly smaller bag since I just got a split board (Kitelement 136 Revolt or some such).

I shipped a MAKO 165 in a Mystic bag to Houston. The board was touching both ends of the bag and got damaged /delaminated in the flight. It was a older MAKO that was known to have delam issuse but if I were to fly my replacement MAKO I would buy a surf board bag and pad the board. You can fit 2 board in one bag easily...
