Hey about to buy my first 8m rally. Should I use my 20 inch bar or buy the 17 that is for sale with the kite? Input please head over there now.

You can fly it with 20inch bar no problem, the only difference may be that it will be even faster and might have a little more power when you send it since the lines are 3m longer.

I'd go for the 17" as that is what is recommended by slingshot, the manufacturer of the kite. A longer bar will have move leverage and thus turn more quickly. This might be offset some with a bit longer lines as longer lines have slower reaction times from input from the kite user.

Longer lines do generate more power.

Once you're a more proficient Kiter you can try the 20" bar.

I've only been kiting for 13 years so what do I know? Smile

I think you know a lot. Very Happy I picked up the 17 bar with the kite. End of the season pricing. May even get to use it tomorrow out east. Or maybe I will windsurf. I know how to do that in gusty high wind. Shocked

Sweet! Welcome to the addiction!

Don't forget to Sharpie your name and number upon bar, bag, pump, and kite (corner and or a lighter part of the kite, board, harness, and wetsuit.

Have fun!

Thank you for the picture voy-tech.
I just sent the link of this post to a French friend looking for the correct size barre.

You should be fine. Nevertheless, I think your instructor buddy was right. I preferred the 20 inch bar by far for the 8th. Even if it seems a bit strange for an 8m.

I also agree with your instructor friend's longer bar suggestion.

Longer bar advantages:

1. A longer bar, induces greater give and take of relative lengths of outside kite lines (measured to the center/fulcrum of the bar). Therefore, the kite pilot delivers more influence to the kite per their ergonomic (wrist, etc.) limits.

2. During relaunch; greater rear/outside line length differential yields greater kite angulation... induces faster ferry of the kite to the critical angle of relaunch.

3. Kite turning speed is increased.

4. Increase force over a shorter bar lever arm is insignificant. Hands should gravitate to center.

Disadvantages of a long bar:

1. It could make a kite too agile/responsive when learning. If so; de-tune the kite by moving rear/outside kite attachment points forward.

2. Long bar Free style kites are so responsive a longer bar is overkill and can over-steer the kite. The size/lenght reduces agility for freestyle tricks, bar passes etc.

3. Long bars have reduced storage/packing convenience

I prefer a kite to be as agile as possible and always opt for a longer bar w/shorter lines.

The Gorge = 20" bar 20m lines
Coast same bar lenght but longer lines (if light wind).
