Going to Duck , North Carolina at end of August . Whats the low down any knowledge here? I would like to send out some kites and rent a board from Kitty Hawk if possible.
I have never kited the east coast ....I hope I can represent the west fairly well 
What kite sizes should I bring?
also hitting DC for a day any suggestions for must see?
I want to see some of the beautiful things our tax dollars can achieve.  |

Depending on your size.....End of August is relatively light winds and big kites - 9m - 14m.
DC - my favorites

70 miles to Hatteras - some sick wave possibilities (hurricane season baby!) and plan a downwinder thru planet of the apes (swamp mirror water - watch for snakes Regi)

Email the folks at Corolla Kiteboarding which is the closest school to Duck as they're about 20 minutes north of you. They don't get the same consistent wind for the long durations that Hatty does, but they have a great place to ride. I suspect they can rent you a board or at a minimum, you can just hook up with them to kite. Maybe they can drop you by boat for some slick downwinders.
None of the KHK locations north of Waves have kite gear, so you'll be out of luck renting from them. I suppose you can ask about them transferring demo gear to a northern store but I don't know if they do that.
For kiting in Duck there is the ocean, obviously. You can do some downwinders north or south of the army pier (between Duck and Corolla on the north end, between Duck and Southern Shores on the south end).
On the sound side (inland, flat water) you have limited launch options, HOWEVER there are two decent ones. First, you have the town soundfront boardwalk which has a nice wide kayak launch. You can pump up a kite there, toss it out into the water and walk out for a firm sandy bottom water launch. Second, whatever community you rent in probably has sound access, so you can launch from there also. Just plan on all your launches being wet. You won't find many soundfront beaches in Duck to launch.
You can go up to Corolla or down south to Nags Head and you'll find a lot more kiters. Or of course, down to Waves. No issues there.
Hope this helps. I kite there regularly and am usually the only kite there. Nobody goes there to kite, but it's windy and you can have a good time. Just don't crash your kite into any tourists or you'll ruin it for...well, me. Have fun out east and email/PM me if you have any questions I didn't answer here. |

We are renting a beach house in duck for a week .....I figured my launch maybe my backyard or is there some legal issues for launch at specific locations.

Nope, you can kite oceanside anytime you want! In fact, they've had a lot of red flag days the past week (no swimming) but you are still allowed to kite and surf. Which is nice because that means the wind is great and you don't have to watch out for swimmers.
Good call on the kite pants. Sharks like kitepants. |
