I borrowed a friend's board for a few weeks and have been kiting at a rocky spot back home in RI. I tagged a few rocks as the tide was going out and did a real number on the fins. Fortunately the board and fin boxes are fine. I picked up a set of plastic fins to use for the next week or so since I'll be kiting at the same local and figured a repeat is fairly likely.
I was curious though is there any appreciable difference in using fiberglass vs. plastic fins? |

aah. Matunuck Beach.
Plastic and glass for kiting, both have advantages. Glass fins will go upwind better and plastic fins retain their flex strength and rebound over a much longer period of time. |

I was surfing Matunuck on 9/11. Damn good swell.
As for glass fins vs. plastic: You probably won't notice much difference if you're kiting. There is a difference in bottom turns, cutbacks, and drive down the line if you're surfing, but the kite changes all those feelings. Run plastic and if you rough 'em up on some rocks, no biggie. |
