Just a heads up if you are flying home from Maui. They are very aware of kiters and are looking for you. The skycaps don't work for the airlines did not help. They said "kite gear" before anyone told them. Best bet is to go directly to the counter, be REALLY NICE, and hope it works.
I was banged for $150 on my golf bag at united - kite gear is on their list of ok stuff, but when you measure Length, width, and height - you will be over. |

next time fly Alaska.
they charge by size and weight. they don't care what's inside the bag.
golf bags typically cost $50.00. |

Go Alaska. I've gotten away with surfboard bags even. Hawaiian just dinged me both ways in April and we were flying first class. |

Yup.. Alaska also has a sporting equipment clause that's helped me. Travelling to Vegas for hockey tournaments with my goalie gear bag and our teams sticks... 30% of the time.. no charge. The rest $50 bucks. _________________ "I have often regretted my speech, never my silence" ~Xenocrates |

Never United! Alaskan rocks always with minimal charges! Hawaiian always hits me $100-120 on surfboards but the standard $50 second bag charge for golf bag (always exactly 50lbs.). And yes, without a doubt, a smile and humble attitude will go far with the locals at the counter upon return!

Your first mistake was United. Hawaiian isn't much better and sometimes the Hawaiian employees check in Alaska Air flights. I put three boards, three kites and a bunch of gear in a wheeled triple. $75 on Ak Air. |
