I was there 10 years ago on a surf trip in late June/early July. Swell was pumping at Barra, scored 3 days of DOH. Wind was out of the west/SW (sideshore) but never came up too strong at that time. Lots of big open beaches, so if the wind is up, it would be pretty sweet and I'm sure you could find some waves to play in too.

Long time lurker, first time poster....I live up Vancouver Island way.

My mother lives in Puerto Escondido, so I have visited the Huatulco area a few times, including surfing at Barra. In PE it is too windy to surf from 11am-4pm everyday, but I am not sure if it was kiteable wind (I only started kiting 3 years ago and haven't been back since). There was pretty much constant sideshore wind at a great surf spot north of PE called Chacahua....very fun surf and would be an epic kite set up if windy enough.

But what interests me most is the beaches from Barra to Salina Cruz....numerous sand point breaks, only accessible by 4x4 and with a gate key....which the local surf camp has. They also do kite tours I understand.

Check out this wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehuano_wind
That is right near Salina Cruz. Watching this global wind map shows it is regularly one of the windiest places on earth:

Lots of good lagoons to kite flat water apparently. Waves with strong offshore wind....need boat support for safety. Huge potential!

I have to get down there someday! In the meantime, need some more firsthand reports! Rent a car, do a day trip, and report back! Laughing

I had to search my email archives for past research on possibilities down there. Below are some links and info from the surf camp operator down there.

I don't know about the lagoons. Some of the safe flat water sailing appears to be in ocean bays, but with a downwind catchment.

My main interest is wave kiting ... offshore winds do create a safety concern to be figured out.

So much potential!
