Sat Jan 04, 14 10:50 am Drysuit recs? |
|
|
Gonna break down and buy a ds, plan on using it until its to cold to kite with a ds in the gorge if that's possible. I've been reading some of the threads I'm just wondering what mst guys are using out there. Any recommendations on specific suits (os/or/kokatat/etc) and where to buy? Socks vs gasket for feet. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sat Jan 04, 14 2:21 pm OS System Drysuit |
|
|
I have been using OS system Drysuit for the last 5 years, I Upgraded to the breathable with socks (not latex type socks) I wear thinsulate socks 3mm booties and my feet are fine, Its a front zip I have had the seals (wrist and Neck) replaced 2 in 5 years. My first drysuit was a OS basic with ankle seals. I would never get another drysuit without the socks, You have to wear booties over them and you can't use split toe booties, but your feet stay warmer and its easier to get out of.
My buddy got the Kokatat drysuit look basically the same except he does not have the zipper cover Another nice feature. Very happy with my OS System Drysuit.

Sat Jan 04, 14 3:42 pm See the 2014 Season Begins!! Thread |
|
|
This topic was just discussed on the "2014 Season Begins!" thread and D-Krep did a nice job with the nicer suits. I just got done trying on a few suits and feel that the Ocean Rodeo was a sweet suit if you have the money and Windance had a nice December package if you go that direction. The Ion Fuse was a steal, on sale for $395 and unfortunately, I bought the last one at the Gorge Surf Shop but maybe they can get some more in. Looks like people are happy with several of the suits that were listed on that thread. If you have the coin there are certainly some advantages to the pricer suits but I couldn't pass up a nice deal with the Ion Fuse even if it was a 2011 suit.
Saw D-Krep and JJ at Rooster today after their session and they both appeared nice and warm with both types of suits. More importantly was the air temp and decent boots and gloves I think.
Hopefully will try mine out tomorrow at Rooster if it doesn't' rip too much.
Cheers

I guess once Dec hit i stopped looking at the wind charts and started looking at snow levels. Half thinking of getting a DS but wondering how often can one expect to get out between now and April ?
i saw the comment in the other tread about brainfreeze while body dragging, is that less of an issue with the hoods on the Dry suits?

I am not sure how often it will be kiteable now till April but I expect at least 3-5 sessions a month.
As far as brain freeze goes, I got it a bit wearing my cap but nothing terrible. I don't like wearing a hood so I don't know if that would stop it. The hood doesn't seal water tight infact mine has drain holes.

ion fuse all the way! ive tried other drysuits without neoprene and i was always cold after a short time standing onshore. with the fuse my hands and feet are much warmer too because my core temp stays higher. the pee zip is a must have for me and the pockets are handy and the hood comes on or off and shields my face really well from 30 mph rain and sand. couldnt be happier.

Glad to help guys... we're really happy with our Ion suits... one thing I forgot to mention is that they are challenging to zip up on your own... its an across the back zipper. Not a deal breaker for me, but definitely a consideration.

Should try both the Soul (w/without socks) and/or the Ignite ds from Ocean Rodeo.
We get many stormy days on Vancouver Island so the drysuit is like night and day compared to a wetsuit for warmth and movement. The hood is helmet compatible and dumps water well after a crash.. without it's great as well.
The Ignite truely is for the extremist who does more than just kite board. Sailing keelboats in the Pacific NW it can turn cruel quickly and this is where the Ignite excels!

I prefer the NP Lucifer over the Soul, But the ocean rodeo soul is a great choice too. It mostly depends on which one has the size that will closest fit you.

I am interested to know what you like better about the NP drysuit.
I didn't know about the NP drysuit when I got my soul.

hey john, I can tell you what sold me on the lucifer, (other than its steezy style) was the ease of putting it on by myself with no help. also the neck gaiter is made of neoprene not latex like the OR suits.
I think the SOL is a very comparable to the lucifer.
keep an eye on the new patagonia drysuits hitting the market. apparently they are releasing two different styles of drysuits, one is neoprene and one is a shell comparable to the traditional suits like OR and lucifer.

Yea one of the biggest things i liked about the lucifer was the neoprene neck seal. Its way more comfortable than the souls neck seal that felt like it was choking me. Also the zipper thing for your harness hook to come out of is a little wierd looking to. Since the soul has a zipper down the center of the jacket, they needed to ofset this hook hole and used a zipper. The lucifer just has a hole in the front of the jacket, thats in the center.
otherwise they both seem equally as durable.

here a couple pics of the way the harness hook comes out of soul vs lucifer. again this is probably mostly cosmetics, but it does look like there can be a lot of pressure on the souls zipper if riding toeside

Why not wear the harness over your jacket?

Its not designed to go over the jacket. will probably move around a lot, but i guess its possible.
