I'm heading to the Yasawa Islands in Fiji in the middle of January '14. Has anyone kited there? Any recommendations? I've been researching but am having a tough time getting an understanding of weather conditions and kiteable spots in the area. Any comments/suggestions would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

Try searching or inquiring through seabreeze.com.au . I think the Aussies get to Fiji way more than NW kiters & that's their big forum.

I kited all kinds of waves in fiji and had a blast. Its been since 07 so i cant remember all the spots I kited. Im almost positive i kited the photo gman has posted. not much swell there, but enough. There is a school on the otherside of that sand spit and the kids went nuts. The wind was super steady though and i had a blast.
Obviously Tavuaru and Namotu are world class, but you have to nut up because those are sick, long, real waves. Except you are there in the offseason for swell. It pumps march -September.
I kited beqa and frigits pass. But surfed more than I kited.
Sorry i cant help more. but bottom line. Bring your gear. place is paradise and you'll have fun.

we spent our honeymoon on Namotu but at the time I didn't kite (only surfed). there were a few afternoons that would have been awesome for kiting. I can't imagine having Namotu lefts on a kite with no one out.

I was there in 2010 in Oct and there wasn't any wind to be found anywhere. We spent the days on the beach and snorkeling the reef in front of our hotel. Take your own mask and snorkel as the gear the have is junk and you'll be SO happy to have good gear for this daily pleasure. The Yasawa group is awesome and you'll have a kickass time regardless. Try to stay out of Nandi (shithole) and do some island hopping if you can!
Enjoy!

Have been over to Fiji kiting at least 8 times but always in their "winter" season of may-september. The tradewind patterns seem pretty similiar to baja with 4-5 windy days followed by a simliar non-windy pattern. Pretty difficult to find big waves and steady exposure to the se/e trades.

In the yasawas Viwa has some nice waves and surf breaks- some of the backpacker resorts that face east will have good wind in the winter months.Fiji can over some good diving , surfing and kiting in the same locale....
