In the Turks & Caicos on brand new 2013 cabrinha crossbow. Measured all my lines and became familiar with qr1/qr2 back home before I left. In the water today super light so thought I would practice. I released the chicken loop anticipating the IDS line would trigger. I ended up with about two feet of IDS line and the kite still powered. I had to pull in the kite via IDS under load and then clipped the chicken loop back in. There was no complete deposed in the kite. I went to attempt a self land and could not get kite to flag in IDS. The bar just sat about 6 feet away and I was attached to the IDS and the kite was downwind pulling me into the beach.

Any ideas? I have a 12m and 8m and coming off Naish. Not super stoked I can't flag my kite. Brand new kite and bar/lines.

Please pass in your advice.

Thanks

DC

I'm not sure I'm totally clear on what you did, so forgive me for clarifying. When you say you "released the chicken loop" does that mean you unhooked and left the kite attached only by your bypass leash? If that's the case the kite will not depower and will act as though you let go of the bar. On cabrinha IDS the bypass leash doesn't do much except act as a safetly leash in case your chicken loop becomes accidentally (or intentionally) unhooked.

To depower the kit and activate the IDS landing line you have to activate the QR1 by the red slider away from the chicken loop, while leaving the chicken loop hooked in. If I'm misunderstanding you and this is what you did, then your IDS landing line may have a kink or knot in it preventing the bar from sliding up on the landing line and fully depowering.

Complicated safety is smart.

Shocked

Keep it simple stupid (KISS) is a acronym the kite companies need to keep in mind.

I did release the Qr1 and that's where I had the issue. I walked all my lines today and not sure if I had a kink but was able to get it to work on dry land. I think I anticipated a Naish type kill switch where the kite would flag instantly. I will report back next session.

Thanks

Maybe your problem is that you are expecting the kite to "flag out". That is not what it does. The kite is designed to turn on it's back when you pull the IDS, effectively depowering it. This is similar to what a North 5th line does. There still will be some pull to the kite. There is no such thing as 100% depower.
