Just secured a camp site at Fort Stevens for Fri-Sun.
Planning on coming down from Puget Sound in search of some waves.
I realize its pretty early to foecast but is anybody thinking the coast will be good this weekend? Were bringing kite gear and paddle boards so we have something to do if we get skunked.

I'm not sure how accurate the NOAA northern Oregon coast forecast is but it seems like light/moderate winds and swell building to 9ft this weekend.
central coast looks much stronger as far as winds go.
What do you guys generally use for forecasting fort stevens?

looks like Sunday is showing the strongest winds.
I was kinda hoping to be on the road by mid day Sunday so hopefully we will get some decent winds Saturday.
I'm real curious to see what this hazardous surf equates to as wave height at Fort Stevens.

This weekend is going to be challenging IMHO if I want to sail ft Stevens. Sunday looks way better than Saturday. To stay up at lot b and hope wind materializes or head down to Manzo for a sure thing and most likely sunshine. I love lot b and the dw'ers but the affect on my blood pressure and my peace of mind is seriously strained when I decide to go to lot b because the forecast is promising and the wind ( maybe sun) might show. All the while it started blowing at Manzo at 12 noon and most likely will build to 9m or 7m wind. While lot b might not kick in till 5 or 6pm and a lighter wind.
Take last Sunday when it was forecasted for 20-25 w/gusts to 30 and it might of gotten up to 15 at most. A lot of the OG Kiters were there fretting like me. At around 4:30 most decided to dismantle their big kites (12-13) and run 45+ miles down to Manzo for a quick evening session (which they scored). I stayed and increased my skunk count to 3 this early in the season.

| I've only ridden lot b a hand full of times, and manzo a bunch. We always just default to going to manzo because it is closer to a guarantee. Are the waves better at lot b than manzo? Or do people just go there cuz its closer? We come from portland, seems like not having to slow down to go through seaside and all that makes it about the same drive for us. Just curious

It's been humming down south here for 10 days now. We got that thermal trough chained in the right place. Hope it goes for you up north. The long period south will combine with that moderate west for some messy clean up sets when you're not looking. All in good fun! smiling while getting demolished helps a lot

One is an apple and one is an orange. Both have their unique properties.
Lot b has some great sand bar breaks and the swell and wind direction allow one to ride a wave a lot easier than Manzo. Hard to get multiple top and bottom turns on waves at Manzo due to direction wind and beach. Water at Manzo is always clear, colder than lot b, and green--lot b water has a brownish tint to it due to the sediment in the water. rise over run with respect to beach slope is much greater at Manzo thus the waves emerge much quicker and disparate faster and in general
are way less forgiving than lot b waves. Basically the beaches south of the Columbia jetty are deposit zones for river sediment. That is why one can walk out 100 + yards at times at lot b/northern strip and only be shoulder high in water. The waves form at a more gradual pace and dissipate at a lesser rate than Manzo waves. The sand is much more course and brown at lot b/northern strip than Manzo. Manzo has much finer sand and its more golden.
I love both locations, but in my opinionated b has much better waves than Manzo.

I sat at Gearheart/Sunset Lane for three hours waiting for the wind to kick in on Sunday. It was very strange, flags were sticking straight out, whitecaps on the water and that shimmer of wind on the horizon. However, on the beach, my shirt barely was flapping and no sand blowing at all. I finally got out my anemometer and it was reading 9-13. A guy launched a 9 and it just barely stayed in the sky. The surf was nasty looking, 5 or 6 big foam balls constantly rolling in which would lead me to believe a good 20+.
What's up with that? Was I reading something wrong?
