Considering a family trip down to either Cannon Beach or Manzanita, I'd like to do Manzanita because it will have the option for kiteboarding for me but I need to find a spot that is also decent for SUP surfing.

I worry that the swell in March will be too big so I'm looking for something with easy knee to waist high waves with a long sandy break.

Any other pros/cons for the two are welcome. I used to camp at Oswald West State Park years ago before they closed the camp grounds and it was one of my favorite places on earth. We'll be renting a house for this trip though.

there are protected spots in coos bay and the brady bunch / floras lake is close by.

give your vacation money to rednecks. they spend it on better toys.

the swell will be macking until late may at least you don't need to worry about that Laughing

Floras is another 4 hours drive South, too far for us.

protected breaks aren't a dime a dozen on or coast.

there is one near newport.

Well I don't necessarily need a protected break, for example today's report lists:
Quote:

Report from Mark at Cannon Beach Surf: Tuesday 830am 12Mar2013. cloudy, but the air temp is in the low 50's, and dry. SSW winds 5-15mph in the am , building to 20+ later. W swell 4-5ft @ 5-11 sec's, but getting blown down to about 3ft and junk.....

3 ft junk sounds about what I'm looking for. This is while the off shore buoys are reading 7 ft wave height. Looking over past years NOAA data looks like 2 m (6 ft) is about the average for March with highs of 4-6 m and lows of 1 m.

I know that in September the waves are pretty tame but I've never come down in March before.

Sept is generally the tail end of the tameness. Spring is usually the bigness, like head high or bigger.

I'm sure Gary Lopez is going out and killing it on a SUP in spring. I've heard that's his regular OR surfing ride these days.

I'm sure with a strong spirit you'll have fun re:less. But getting outside the break in spring generally requires decent skills unless it is an unusally protected spot, of which there aren't all that many along the OR coast.

One forecast or day doesn't make a season. You asked, expect big surf through June and you'll get the days where it is smaller.

For protection Manzo is better. You can SUP on the Nehalem if it's too big on the ocean.

I like Cannon Beach for suping cause i can be out in the surf and the family can be out on the patio at Surf Sand watching me. I think I can consider that quality family time.

I went bodyboarding at Manzanita a couple years ago, spent 20 minutes paddling out, and another 30 just trying to get back in, it was the biggest rip I've ever seen, I thought I was done for. I had fins and webbed gloves on and had to paddle sideways for what seemed like a quarter mile before I could find something to bring me back in. I've probably kited over rips like that many times before without ever taking them seriously. I was with a bunch of friends with SUPs, none of them were even able to make it out past the inside waves, which didn't really seem that big. You're smart to save the SUPing for Short Sands or Indian Beach. I hope you score wind!
