Rhode Island Kiting

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be in Newport Rhode Island the last week of April/first week of may. Should I bring kite gear? Looks like it may be a bit early based on my quick internet search.

If you don't bring it, it's going to blow. If you do, it won't. Smile

Seriously though if you have room and you think you'll have some free time bring some gear. I've never been kiting out there but that's just what I would think about. If I ever go traveling somewhere I usually bring kite gear if I can. Hopefully somebody on here will know more about the local conditions around there during that time though.

Not sure of the season out there but if it's blowing there are some great spots only a couple of hours away on Cape Cod or down on Long Island. Nice people out there as well!

Massachusetts's version of nwkite, http://masskiting.com/ is a descent source of info for New England. Certainly bring your 5/4 wet suit or dry suit that time of year.

Definitely bring your stuff. April and May are usually excellent months in RI/MA. There is kiting all over the place just look at google maps and find a beach. Very uncrowded as well. That time of year the water is still cool so you'll need some thick rubber including sometimes booties, gloves and hood. By the middle of May all the accessories have usually come off and it's just a 4/3 wetsuit with spring booties. Also depending on which beaches you are on the water temps can vary greatly.

There is a kite shop in Newport, Hooley Boardsports or something like that. Also a short drive to cape offers limitless opportunities. As well, a trip out to Block Is. can be pretty amazing.

Bring your stuff, I live in Providence now and spring is probably the windiest season here. Plenty of kiting to be had. Hit me up when your in town and I could steer you in the right direction..

I'm thinking about coming up this weekend from DC to visit my folks in RI. I'm a beginner kiteboarder. I've been looking at the Weather on Saturday and it looks mid teens, but gusty (up to 22) ENE. Would Ninigret (Pond) be good in this direction/speed/condition? If so, can anyone point to or provide the local rules/hints for riding there? I checked out Kitebeaches, but didn't get a lot of info on parking/hazards/hints.

winters in the Northeast are excellent for kiting, but definitely not beginner friendly. the place will likely be deserted.

I've only kited there in a SE. I'm not sure how you will get off the beach in a NE but I'm only familiar with the standard launch area.

I'm sure folks will be snowkiting with the forecasted storm. That seems to be your better bet, try to hook up on masskiting.com

ninigret wind is super gusty. Way more windsurfers there than kiters and the launch blows. GO TO THE CAPE!! chapin is great and perfect for all levels on a NE.
