Anyone know of a local company that rents 4wd jeeps/SUV for the day or week at SPI?

180 looks and no response? I can't resist. Most people rent a vehicle at the Brownsville airport and drive to SPI. You can rent an SUV if you want to. You don't need 4wd to drive out on the sand on the bay side. Although I did not sail on the ocean side, I learned that most people start from a lot on the south end and get picked up somewhere near the end of the road to the north, miles north. No need to drive out on the sand. There is a sand buggy rental place on the main drag. I can't remember much about it. The beach is very long and people do 4wd for miles I guess. Don't know what for.

I've been there before and always enjoyed heading further north from the flats on the bay side. The problem is last time when the flats flooded the minivan could only go so far. Ok... I'll admit we got stuck by trying to follow a local in 4wd. They were super cool and pulled us out though. Just don't want to be a burden on the next visit.

A boat may be a better option.

There is a place here on Padre Blvd that rents Dune buggies and jeeps. You will see it when you cruise the Blvd.

ya but there prices suck. 20miles up the beach is port mansfield jetty, a great spot to surf (and fish and camp).

40 mins highway and 6mi on the beach is boca chica, another great surf and kitesurf spot. from boca chica you can access super sick flats as well, that where this speed session went down (although we missed the optinmal wind direction by a few degrees (and about 30 minutes))
