PostSun Jul 10, 11 1:57 pm    Where to get Kiteboard Lesson anywhere near Cannon Beac Reply with quote

hi!

I am looking to find someone who gives great private kiteboard instruction to help me to buy a lesson for my husband for our vacation to Cannon Beach on Friday, August 12.

He has his kiteboard equipment, wetsuit, etc., but he has not picked it up in 5 years and would really like to. He needs a "refresher" on the sport and will probably pick it up pretty quickly again because he's done it before, he's fit and pretty athletic.

We don't mind travelling a bit to your beach if you think teaching would be better at another beach, but we will be based out of Cannon Beach that day (we are actually coming in on Thursday evening for beach volleyball tournament in Seaside that weekend), so it can't be really, really far away.

I've looked online -- no luck. I've called all the surf shops in Seaside and Cannon Beach -- no luck. I've even called a kiteschool at the Gorge and they have no recommendations for me. Help!

Barb

PS -- I actually am part of a group of about 100 people taking over a campground at Cannon Beach that weekend to play volleyball and MANY of them are looking for something fun and athletic to do on that same Friday. If you know of anyone who can put together something beginning level in kiteboarding, paddleboarding, or surfing for them, I'll bet I could get you a lot of takers for Friday, August 12.

Thanks in advance for any/all recommendations! Believe me when I tell you I've been trying my best to find anyone who can do this and it's surprising to me that finding any teaching professionally in this area is pretty hard to do!

Call Cleanline Surf shop in Seaside and ask for Josh. He will know who is currently teaching. I remember seeing people occasionaly taking lessons at the Seaside river inlet. Jones Beach is an hour drive from there with great lessons as well (air-pirate.com).

Good luck!

I second the vote for Nate from Air Pirates. He mainly teaches at Jones beach - but he does lessons out on the coast all the time. I am sure he would probably travel to Cannon beach for a lesson (as long as the wind forecast was good). Give Nate a call!

I’d recommend you talk to Josh and the crew at Cleanline. There is a shop in Cannon Beach as well as Seaside. They have great kite instructors and no one is more familiar with the wind and waves of the North Coast. They can more than likely help with fun finding for the needs of the rest of your crew as well.

I had already put in calls to both surf shops in Cannon Beach and Seaside and for the knowledge of everyone on this board neither shop offers kiteboard instruction.

As soon as I posted on this board Josh from cleanline called me back (I had called for him at his shop 2 weeks prior with no response) and he said he'd try to help. Within 5 minutes Nate from air pirates called me back. The great news is that he can do it. The not great news is that he has to charge me some sort of surcharge just because I had called Cleanline before calling him. I'll never know how much i could have gotten the lessons for, but I do feel kinda ripped off now.

Lesson: find this board and figure out how to log in BEFORE calling the surf shops. They will take advantage of your tourist status. Smile

If anyone else does lessons let me know!

roxygrrrl,

Sorry if you mistakenly interpreted the surcharge. The surcharge is for the extra expenses it costs us to be able to offer lessons on coast without it turning into a charity. Not for calling Cleanline before us. You never mentioned calling Cleanline during our conversation. I have no problem with anyone looking to Cleanline for lessons, they are great people and friends. We have a good relationship with Cleanline. I'm sorry the price of kiteboard lessons was such a shock to you. I won't get into that debate since there are already 2 threads about it here on nwkite, you can read those. It is not a cheap sport.

When we teach on the coast we need a full day booked so it is worth the time of my instructors to spend the day working their. It is not cost effective for them personally to only teach a couple hours. But with enough notice we can schedule one lesson in advance and usually fill up the rest of the day on the coast.

Sorry for any confusion and misunderstandings.

Roxygrrl, perhaps you should understand where you are posting before writing accusatory statements. This a forum of kiteboarders in the Pacific Northwest, a very close-nit community. Everybody loves Nate and knows that he would never cheat somebody, in fact, I've only ever heard of him bending over backwards to help people out (not the other way around). I'm sure your husband understands the costs involved in kiteboarding, perhaps you should have him do the negotiating.

Since this is obviously degenerated into a bashing session, I will leave your comments (and your forum) to speak for themselves.

My comment was based on something Nate said in our conversation regarding how "because you came through Cleanline, the prices are a bit elevated compared to if you had come directly through our shop." No offense to Nate at all -- just the reality of what he shared on the call and I'm sure what he has to do.

I also have no problem with the price of kiteboarding -- I have disappointment over being charged more than the regular rates would be due to having called the local surf shops first.

Aloha

Sad roxy. I have often received referrals from Cleanline and have taught on the north coast for years (thanks Ben for the good words). I have never seen or heard of this type of response. I know that Josh did not leave you hanging for 2 weeks. I confirmed this with Nate and Josh. Furthermore, we do not even give novices or beginners lessons on the water here and feel it is safer and in the customer's interest to send them to Ben, Nate, or the gorge where the schools are better set up and launches more conducive to learning. therefore we turn away business with your safety and satisfaction in mind. Take advantage?

Sorry you are having trouble.

I my line of work - we record what we tell our clients in person, and what we tell them on the phone everyday. A majority of the time - they misinterpret 10-30% of the conversation. Sometimes - they remember the conversation totally opposite of what we told them. It is just human nature. Our perceptions are not always reality. Ever play the game "telephone?" Each time a verbal message is passed on - the message changes.

Why are you "holding on" to what you "thought" Nate told you on the phone? He came on this forum and explained why there was an extra charge for coast lessons. He also offered a way to minimize that charge if they were able to book other lessons on the coast for that day. Or you could take 45 mins and drive to Jones Beach. Instead you are holding onto what you "thought" Nate told you in a single phone conversation and condemning the whole kiting comunity on a kiting forum? Good luck with that..................
